You think West African Fulanis who were enslaved to the US got better treatment than say Asante slaves because they can have thin/narrow features? :ohhh:
No. I merely pointed out where people get the idea of "black" features. Notice they tend to say "black" features as opposed to African features.
If only you would follow a conversation instead of searching for points to debate. Where do you think the White beauty standard comes from? Why do you think someone called Iman a white woman dipped in chocolate when she is Somali? Because those features are considered '"white", and thus beautiful, while Nina's features are considered "black" and thus ugly.

The idea of race is not based on genealogy but phenotype.

And even in America, Nina is an outlier.

justify and continue to perpetuate ignorance because its the norm :dead:

Beverage Fridge, 3rd Row!!
Y'all are straight trippin' on this board.

Here we are asking for an actress who resembles Nina Simone and the struggles she went through, that she documented in her own work and you guys are now saying well "Nina was ugly anyways so. . ."

So why have Zoe Saldana play her???

Hows does this make sense???

You don't have to find Nina Simone attractive, fine.

Do you like her music? Do you know anything about her story? Do you even care because she's not pretty enough to be heard?

I made the example of Barbara Streisand, and whereas she never raced racism, she's not considered conventionally attractive and have often been told to get a nose job.

Don't you know if hollywood cast Charlize Theron to play her in a movie there would be a similar uproar especially since Barbara refused to get a nose job or change her looks to fit conventional beauty standards.

I agree with almost everything you said

but I'm not ignoring or condoning the erasure of Nina Simone's story

I've said since the beginning of this thread that this is what happens when you have a one drop rule and claim mixed people as black. Especially one like Zoey, that claims black when it's convenient but when she's around non black people she claims latina

Black women said that "we are all black women, we come in all shades, and should be appreciated equally". That's fine and dandy, but in a white supremacist system they will use that against you.

My issue is that why are people surprised this is happening. The white people in charge of this film do not give a flying fukk about Nina Simone's legacy or her story and music.

Theyre using this film to promote their agenda and bleed money from the BC.

Her look isn't within the range of norm.
She's an outlier but people have named several famous people with similar features in this thread. Imagine all the non famous women with similar features. Especially, since the point many people have made is that the women with those features are underrepresented.

"several"

1 being a Zimbabwean and Viola Davis so 2. And no, Lupita looks nothing like Nina.

Don't have to imagine when I live in a Black city and her look is far from prevalent.

You're looking for an exact match and that's not a requirement really. Just someone with a simlilar aesthetic.

Viola Davis, very pretty in my opinion, could have easily have played her, with make up and even prosthetics (it's called acting) and could have been transformed into Nina Simone.

Zoe Saldana doesn't have the same aesthetic nor acting chops tbh. They tried to turn Nina into a tortured artist type divorcing her from issues she faced as a black woman with dark skin and features that weren't considered conventionally beautiful. Whitewashing her story.

But who could have really played her is Leslie Jones the actress from SNL. . just based on looks. She doesn't have name recognition or probably the same acting ability as Viola though I'm sure.
