I have no hard feelings against Zoe.

With that said, she and the production should have really thought twice about this and knew that it was going to cause some uproar.

Ah well.

If it wasn't for nina's looks playing a role in her life, this casting wouldn't be soo bad. Then again, I wonder how many people complaining, are actually fans of her music and wanted to see a biopic of her life?:jbhmm:

Probably not too many. So many people love to get on the band wagon for a fifteen minute ride.

Did Nina's estate sign off on making this movie or not?

The Dirty South
I hate that biracial, mixed and light skinned are used interchangeably around here. All it does is create faux outrage from a handful of color struck individuals looking to promote an agenda.

I don't have a problem with Zoe identifying as Afro Latina but I'm not here for using a black woman and her struggle to get a damn Oscar nom. To me, she's no better than a cultural appropriator and another case of Hollywood outsourcing American born black roles.

black woman are the first ones to say "we are all black women and should appreciate black womanhood in every shade"

but when a mixed black woman becomes the face of black woman, that shyt goes out the window :sas1:
Different situation, are you familiar with Nina Simone?

Fake outrage, but Zoe brought this on herself with the pseudo new black shyt she was spewing before. Nothing wrong with an Afro-Latina playing Nina Simone, if she had more African features. Zoe is definitely a miscast.

And "racial ambiguity"

I saw some dumb Twitter militant say narrow or hooked noses means you're racially ambiguous when a large portion of Africans have those features :snoop:

The irony is that Zoe DOES have a wide nose. Not as wide as Nina's obviously, but wide none the less.

She claims black when convenient and Latina when convenient and mixed when convenient.

Only in America can half breeds and mongrels dictate who is black or white or anything. I know cacs don't let fukking troglodytes like Poitier tell them anything, but I have to sit here and listen to them debase the black man into nothingness.

"What is black? Everybody is black. Black people can look like anything" fakkits eat a dikk.
Talking about being Latina is not saying you're not black. That's her culture.

That's like saying Rihanna speaking about being West Indian is her claiming not to be black.

Agreed.

If we gonna be honest with ourselves, is it really any different than Will playing the Nigerian Doctor in Concussion or buddy in The Pursuit Of Happiness?

Lightskin brehs and brehettes playing darker skins people is rediculous in itself to me. The fact they had to cake on makeup for Zoe to even play Nina says enough. It's be the same with a darker skin person playing a lighskin dude. You want my man Michael K Williams from the Wire playing Obama? :skip:

I get that she probably thought it was a good movie, script, etc and that Nina would be a good person to portray but if you gotta cake up with makeup to play her, maybe you should have let someone else do it.

The actor they chose to play Obama in the film about him and Michelle is much darker.

Happens all the time. Denzel as Malcolm X. Idris as Mandela.

She's mixed--part PR and Dominican-- and is clearly in disturbing blackface so as to make her look actually black like Nina. It's no different than Robert Downey Jr and his blackface --- except no one is going to watch Zoe Saldana shyt on Nina Simones's memory. The joke is on you and her.

A brown skinned person wearing a darker shade of brown foundation is NOT BLACKFACE.

Forest Whitaker and Kerry Washington both had darker foundation applied to them in The Last King of Scotland.

Think the uproar has more to do with Zoe and probably her history of dating white men. Folk mad cuz she doesn't look like Nina? It's a gotdamn movie. :scust:

If you can act it doesn't matter. Denzel didn't look anything like Malcolm X.

I swear y'all
Think if a black person isn't 100% African DNA they aren't black even though you have that Gambian dictator doing worse to black people over the years
