Kobe Bryant, Known AAU Hater, Is Starting His Own Youth Basketball League

APR 21, 2017
  • Kobe Bryant has the same perspective on AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) basketball as seemingly every other former baller out there. Former greats watch youth basketball today and comment on it like Uncle Drew: “Back in my day…we got buckets.”

So, what’s wrong with it? Primarily, kids seek their own shots in AAU. They play one-on-one “hero ball.” They’re out there trying to get noticed by recruiters, so they ignore the fundamentals.

In 2015, Bryant made his point of view very clear.

“AAU basketball—horrible, terrible AAU basketball,” he told ESPN Los Angeles. “It’s stupid. It doesn’t teach our kids how to play the game at all, so you wind up having players that are big and they bring it up and they do all this fancy crap and they don’t know how to post. They don’t know the fundamentals of the game. It’s stupid.”

Bryant isn’t just sitting back and being critical, though. He’s actually taking action and trying to change youth hoops.

As a part of Bryant’s extremely active “retirement,” he has partnered with Nike and the Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club to launch the “Mamba League.” The league is a 40-team co-ed youth basketball division. It will run for eight weeks, February-April, in Southern California.

Nike posted a video announcing the league and its premise.

“The Mamba League is a fun league for kids to learn the game and have fun,” Kobe said. “But also to understand the connection that the game has with life in general, and convert that into being a better son, a better daughter, and a better student.”

Good on Kobe for taking action on something he cares about. The league’s coaches are 40 Nike store employees, but they aren’t totally unqualified—USA Basketball trained them on the fundamentals, mentorship, and connecting with young ballers. It helps having Kobe Bryant on your side.

Lonzo played in the same gimmick we will find out when he goes to UCLA, if hes still playing the same way for those coaches then yea hes not getting anywhere in the NBA.
The difference is Lonzo commanded the floor and clearly demonstrated his next level ability (shooting and passing). He's the only reason we know the Ball brothers. He also dominated at camps against other top guards. Melo has yet to do either. I'm not saying he can't play, but he isn't an NBA star.

None of these high schoolers are NBA stars, we will be much better informed when these kids head to college. I remember the Coli hyping seventh woods as a kid calling him the next rose, he has not done much in college.

Eastside of that Motor
The way the coli talked about Zion I was expecting to see a Kobe, a tmac. Dude is just your average explosive hs going against cats smaller than him, the type to avg 4 ppg in college and be a tweener
Nothing average abou that boy
Only comparisons I can think of this Lebron (w/o the other skills of course :whoa: ) and bill Walker. One turned out great one didn't. We will see how Zion does in a few

He's only 15, he's already 6'3, he can create his own shot, he has court vision he can finish.

Your just a hater

I'd love to see your proof that at 15, Chris Paul, Kyrie were seen as future NBA talent

Dudes watching a kid playing in a gimmick system on both ends of the court and projecting him to be a star nba player. Can't defend, no strength, volume shooter, can't jump, but he's going to be a star in college and the NBA.

Can someone name me one thing Lamelo does great? Don't tell me shoot when he just had a game shooting 17-56.

Edit: before the "but but he's only 15", he's officially in his junior year. Look at every star guard in the NBA, and besides Steph, Westbrook, and Isaiah (who are anomalies either based on athleticism, skill, or size), the majority of them were projected as NBA talents or first round talent at 15/16. Kyrie, Wall, D Rose, CP3 were on the NBA radar at that age. Lamelo is not even close to what those guys were at 15. He's not even Lonzo at 15 :pachaha:

You can do your own research, it's not hard to look up. im around the game. Kyrie was pegged as an NBA player despite his size very young. CP3 was a foregone conclusion as well. Go pick up an old slam magazine or any other publication covering basketball at the time. Kyrie is very easy to look up. Hell, Jayson Williams was on the NBA radar at his age.

You're reasoning as to why he's going to be an NBA star is that he's 15, 6'3 and can create his own shot and has court vision :pachaha: get a number and stand in line

He hasn't dominated any game against any real competition but I'm supposed to think he's going to compete against Russell Westbrook.

He just shot 17-56 against some random AAU last week and lost. He's a product of highlights and hype.
