I’m just having some fun at your expense. Although I do now assume I’m older than you.

What assumptions have I posted?

You're definitely not having fun at my expense. I haven't spent days posting about an artist that I already admitted I didn't like.

That anomaly was in regard to the Hot 100, not the other charts. I see we're still talking charts when they are supposed to be meaningless.
You asked me a question about them. Plus it’s an anomaly with one song.
I’m not convinced the other charts weren’t affected. I don’t know all the ins and outs of it.

The article you posted about it being an anomaly pointed out that it didn't affect it charting on other charts.

It said that with regard to Hot R&B and Hip Hop Songs and it also says it peaked at #4 but that was Sock It To Me/The Rain In November of 97. Which means it was really Sock It To Me. So I’m not sure.
All I know is that The Rain was a bigger record than Sock It To Me. :yeshrug:

That’s why I say selling the same as the 97 album was actually a symptom of her flopping. The market had changed and she should have sold more.

I don't know why you're still harping on Da Real World being a flop. Unless you're willing to apply that same metric across the board, you can't justify that album being a flop.

The market didn't necessarily change. According the chart you posted, Hip Hop album certifications were increasing significantly from 1996-2000. That also doesn't mean she should've sold more. Jay, Juve, and other artists were selling less than what their previous albums did. X dropped two albums in the same year and FOFBOMB sold less than IDAHIH. Puffy was 7X platinum in 1997 and only platinum in 1999. Mase was multi platinum in 1997/1998, but was gold in 1999. Will Smith was like 9X platinum in 1997/1999, but his 1999 album was nowhere near that. Significant drop offs and not slow burners.

That was part of my point about 1999. None of the '99 albums had artists consistently going 5-9X platinum. Only Eminem, DMX and Dr. Dre were doing that and they dropped in late 1999.

"The Rain" felt bigger given its impact. In terms of hit song, it wasn't necessarily a hit as much as it was a song that had a bigger impact.

Yes. But the largest increase by far was from 97 to 98. 18 albums to 30.
The total had been hovering from 9-13 from 1988 to 1995. The increases in 96 (16) and 97 (18) were gradual.

What a lot of those artists have in connection with Missy is that their 99 singles didn’t connect. Obviously putting Hot Boys to the side.

Jay is actually a good example because that album was also saved by a later single (Big Pimping). Not to mention that Jay had already benefitted from the sales boom in a major way in 98-99 with Vol 2.

What does this mean? If it has a big impact it would be a hit. Were you thinking of influence? Or are you saying it was really big for a short period of time and then quickly faded away?

And I don’t know why you’re still harping on it not flopping prior to being saved by Hot Boys.

Because it didn't. So you're telling me the following albums were flops:

Vol. 3
Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood
Tha G Code

^^^ all of these albums sold considerably less than the album that came before. The difference is even after the album cycles, these albums NEVER reached the success of the predecessor.

Then you have these albums that sold slow, which apparently means a flop according to you:

Illmatic (yielded no hits and took almost 2 years to go gold)

Reasonable Doubt

^^^ so if you're telling me that these albums are flops, I will concede because I see where your reasoning and logic is because it would at least be consistent.

Not necessarily. There's songs that never got much radio play, but had huge impact. It doesn't mean they were hits. There are songs that are hits, but really don't have impact. "The Rain" is a classic single, but was hardly a runaway hit.

Increase does not occur in 1999 without 1996 being the catalyst.

Those plaques in 1999 just didn't occur out of the blue and I'm sure a lot of those platinum certifications were from late 1998 entries that went plat in 1999.
