Moving weights slowly is sub-optimal. When you lift "heavy" weights (~90%+ intensity) the movement itself may be slow, but you are applying a lot of force to move that weight. Try and squat/bench/DL/etc your max with a forced slow motion and see if you can still lift it. The effort you put into moving your heavy weights should also be applied to your light weights as well (esp if you care about power and strength).
For power/explosive training where growth isn't important or sought after, sure.
It has a place everywhere else.
padding doesn't do much for me, it's like wearing a condom, it's actually an annoyance. I have yet to exhibit any problems with my shoulders.
My neck gets tore up without padding lol
