I disagree. I think in Ellie's case, both times were of her own will. That flashback of Joel was a visual symbol of the urge for closure. Tommy gave her that final push. Abby on the other hand always wanted to kill Ellie and be a complete savage wanting to kill everyone but like Joel she values the ones she loves opinions and how they feel. That's why she couldn't go through with it the 2nd time because she didn't want to disappoint and horrify Lev. We all saw the horror on Lev's face.
