It makes sense. Games cost more to make. Plus inflation. Price should have gone up years ago :yeshrug:

Given everything, they should have gone up in 2013. This shyt is expensive for people to make. The education to learn new technologies, purchasing new technologies. I already baked that into the pie for this gen. No complaints from me.

I keep seeing these points brought up - "higher production costs", "inflation", but what research / information / data is out there to really support a higher price point? How does inflation make sense if wages haven't really gone up? Historically, prices for electronics have gotten cheaper over time due to faster technology, so what's the precedent for increasing the price of videogames? How does the advanced computing power of next-gen factor into production costs, and are expensive AAA titles really struggling to break even or do they just want to increase their profit margins?

I'm asking because I don't know, and I can't find any thorough explanations out there

I paid more for n64 games. Hobbies can be expensive. All of this anger seems misplaced. I felt that I got a full experience from 2k20 without any additional purchases. 4k assets aren't cheap. Lossless audio isn't cheap. I know people are complaining about the micro transactions but why fault them? There is obviously a market for it. Multiple revenue streams can't be good only when they work in our favor. Dev teams are larger. Adjusted for inflation, then it is still cheaper than a 60 dollar game from way back when.

to be fair though games prices have been stagnant for a minute.

Development teams are larger. To reach photo realism for games. I'll use Forza. Trips all over the world to these tracks. Processing the data from manufacturers so that the cars control realistically. Licensing deals. Middleware engines like speed tree or unreal engine. Turn 10 outsources the modeling of their cars for example. Voice actors and other acting talent as well.

But if companies have thrived for this long on a $60 price point, what's the justification in upping the price for next-gen? I would have thought faster and better technology would decrease production costs, not raise them?

And this is probably comparing apples to oranges, but movies cost around the same as a videogame to produce and have gotten more expensive to create over the years as well, yet neither ticket prices nor owning the movie on Blu-Ray would ever see a $10 jump from an already unaffordable price point to most of $60. What's the cost-benefit analysis of raising to $70 and effectively pricing out even more consumers?

Movie companies are getting more from ticket sales.

The increase from 2005 to just 2013 went up 24%. This change in gaming is 17% from 2005 which is when the Xbox 360 came out.

An increase in 24% from $6.98 to $8.65 is a much smaller deal than a 17% bump from $50 to $60. You can raise the price of a McDonalds meal by 25% and hardly anyone would notice, but if you did that for the price of a car then that's a huge difference

Edit: The global games industry is worth 135 b's and counting. So I'm just a little skeptical that companies are struggling with a $60 price point on their products.

Newzoo Cuts Global Games Forecast for 2018 to $134.9 Billion; Lower Mobile Growth Partially Offset by Very Strong Growth in Console Segment | Newzoo

Last of Us 2 sold 4mil in its first week, and that game presumably had a budget in the 9 digits, which means they're already likely breaking even if not in the green.
