Xbox says the reason they don't market games much is because they don't have the money Sony has

Why would they say that out loud
Xbox and Football Manager held a competition where the winner would be placed on the coaching staff of a real life Football (soccer) Club. the winner went on to be successful in his role, and got the team promoted

with all this Xbox was able to triple the number of downloads for Football Manager. the quote comes from an interview about this, and how they were able to pull it off with their budget

I don't even think this is just an EMEA issue. Even here in Canada there is rarely any marketing for Xbox or gamepass. The only recent marketing I've seen was done by their third party partners in Sega for Persona, MLB for MLB the show, and Blizzard for Diablo. Other than that, they don't even do much marketing in North America and rely heavily on word of mouth which clearly doesn't work in their favour.

Gamepass for example has been around for 6+ years and I've only seen 2 ads of them advertising it and even then it wasn't a memorable ad. The average person doesn't know what gamepass is and why it benefits them, and that's all on their overall failure to market their products. It's insane that Phil and Greenberg are still around when they've failed their way to the top. All of the stooges should've got the boot and Satya should've hired somebody externally to fix their mess

Lastly, it's not good for Microsoft to leave console manufacturing industry because overall that will screw over many indie and third party devs. Sony and even Microsoft to a certain extent not buying marketing rights to games will hurt many stakeholders. Plus, you somewhat need Microsoft to keep Sony honest because they can easily raise prices too as they already have with PS+

Advertising budgets are out of fukkin control 200+ mill to advertise the largest games.

Microsoft seems to be cutting costs on advertising and investing in things like gamepass, cloud etc.

Seems to be working for them in the new world of “xbox”

Sure, if their was a consistent presence in the market, less marketing would be necessary.

But the market in question, Xbox is statistically non-existent in. Standard business practice would be to have significant or consistent branding and marketing to boost growth. You can only explain the lack of interest in pushing the brand in that market as Xbox officially abandoning it.

TV commercials ain’t gone break the hold playstation has on the console market in europe. It’s a done deal. The brand is too strong and the market is shrinking while PC and mobile are exploding. It makes lots more sense to spend the money on expanding in those markets.

but they don't even advertise xbox in their stronghold. I saw more advertisement for a game like deatlopp than I saw for any xbox game. It's actually crazy they don't even do little stuff like buy billboard space for their major games while Sony does that for all of their games. It's clear their word of mouth marketing isn't working because xbox growth has stalled, which is why it's in its current place it is today

Xbox growth has not stalled.

Player engagement is up for them across all platforms.

They are definitely more conservative with marketing budgets than sony, but sony is gonna need to rein some of that in too. There’s more effective ways to market without throwing a bunch of money at ads.

That’s actually what the news story in the op is about. A very effective marketing campaign that didn’t cost much but resulted in a tangible increase in xbox players.

What’s in the OP is actually a good thing, a success story for xbox. But as usual the concern trollers ignore context and spin it in to pages of bashing xbox. :stopitslime:
