X-Men: The Animated Series Revival, Release Window Confirmed for Disney+

Disney+ is developing an X-Men: The Animated Series revival featuring a number of original voice actors for 2023.

BY NOAH DOMINGUEZPUBLISHED NOV 12, 2021
X-Men: The Animated Series is getting a revival on Disney+.

According to TheWrap, the new show is called X-Men '97, picking up where the original 1990s series left off. Marvel Studios is producing the series, with Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith and Alyson Court all reprising their roles. Disney+ itself confirmed the news with a classic Wolverine meme.

While Marvel's mutants have starred in numerous animated projects over the years, the first full-blown series to hit screens was X-Men (aka X-Men: The Animated Series), which aired on Fox Kids for 76 episodes across five seasons from 1992 to 1997. The series -- which is currently available to stream in its entirety on Disney+ -- remains a beloved classic to this day, and was even credited with setting the wheels in motion for 20th Century Fox's live-action X-Men film franchise.

X-Men: The Animated Series was followed by X-Men: Evolution, which ran on Kids' WB for 52 episodes across four seasons from 2000 to 2003. Evolution was itself followed by Wolverine and the X-Men, which ran on Nicktoons for a single, 26-episode season in 2009. Like The Animated Series, X-Men: Evolution and Wolverine and the X-Men are now currently available to stream on Disney+.

Amid The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of 20th Century Fox and the advent of the Disney+ streaming service, there has been much speculation regarding what the on-screen future hold for Marvel's mutants, with rumors of a new X-Men cartoon -- possibly a reboot of the original Animated Series -- having circulated as of late.

The Marvel Studios animated series X-Men '97 is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2023.

X-Men '97 Producers Reveal Intel on X-Men: The Animated Series Revival

By CAMERON BONOMOLO - February 7, 2022 08:15 pm EST
  • Marvel Studios' X-Men '97. Husband and wife team Eric and Julia Lewald, two of the creators behind the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series, join original series director Larry Houston as consulting producers on the animated revival ordered at Disney+. Picking up where The Animated Series left off in 1997 after 76 episodes across five seasons, X-Men '97 revisits the iconic '90s timeline with new and returning cast members voicing the Marvel mutants. In an interview with Justin Underwood (Spideyjeu09 on YouTube), the consulting producers shared new intel on X-Men '97 and revealed a 10-episode first season expected to premiere mid-2023 on Disney+.

"They want it to be an extension [of X-Men: The Animated Series]," original showrunner Eric Lewald said. "Whoever it is doing this new show is going to make it their own, no matter who is involved in it. There is great love and affection and respect from an entire group of people that are doing this show, starting at the top with Beau DeMayo, who's the showrunner."

Lewald added, "I believe they're looking at 10 episodes for the first season that's going to come out mid-next year. They're starting it soon after ours ended... 'Where is [Professor X?]'"

Previously on X-Men, the mutants watched as Empress Lilandra (voice of Camilla Scott) took a gravely wounded Professor Xavier (Cedric Smith) into space to be cured by the Shi'Ar Empire. X-Men '97 begins with Xavier's disappearance and will "build off of that," Lewald said.

The continuation faithfully recreates the style of X-Men: The Animated Series and brings back many of the original cast members, including Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), Chris Potter (Gambit), Catherine Disher (Jean Grey), Adrian Hough (Nightcrawler), and Christopher Britton (Minister Sinister).

"They could have just said, 'We're just going to do a new show.' We have friends that were part of other very successful shows, and when they get rebooted, not a phone call, not a card, not a bit of recognition, just, 'We're going to do a new show,'" Lewald said. "In this case, they were all nice and respectful enough. We said, 'It's your show. We're here if there's a red flag,' but we're on for that, or maybe some ideas of things we'd like to see. But really, it's their show. You can tell by the design. It's the same but slightly modernized, slightly a bit more beautiful, five times the money spent on it. Not that we're bitter (laughs)."

For the first X-Men title produced by Kevin Feige's Marvel Studios, Disney+ has allotted "this wonderful huge budget, and with a lot of thought going into it," Lewald said. "These are real superfans, really respectful superfans of the show, extending the show into new places. We couldn't have asked for a better setup than that."

    X-Men '97 is streaming on Disney+ in 2023.

Marvel's X-Men '97 Episode Count Revealed

So this is NOT a reboot or remake, they're literally just picking up where the last episode left off.

How do coli breh's feel about this? I'm extremely mixed on it since I grew up with the show. On one hand it sounds great but I'd hate for them to mess it up. They're even getting the OG voice actors :damn:

No faith in modern animation if you can even call it that. All this bs is computer generated now. Just look at what Disney did with the Duck Tales reboot, straight doodoo water.
Also, they're introducing fakkitry, trannys, and gender confused they/thems in our beloved classics.

That old X-Men cartoon was heat I was only 10-11 when it came out I was always either in BBall, football, baseball practice on Saturdays but my grown ass 24-25 yrs old cousins would record the shyt and have watch parties. This shyt Spiderman, and Batman was heat rocks that even adults was watching cause they grew up reading the source material. I would also add Gargoyle's to that list. Combination of dope animation, great voice acting and deep storylines that resonated to different generations I would highly doubt that they would do it justice at D+ they probably fill it up with jokes and shyt but I'll watch the first 2 eps.

I'm glad I'm Debrid/easynews Gang cause I ain't paying for 10 diff streaming platforms too many shows are watered down and formulaic. Like they just do shows to fill up an algorithm and have lots of content but not dope content.

So they confirmed the revival is picking up right where OG left off with Prof. X laid up in a hospital bed. :heh:

Plus the OG show runners are consultants and they swear by the new crew running things :jbhmm:

Man.... dude this is taking me back to 96-97 in a huge way. I remember having that episode on video tape :wow:

Do you know how many folks they gon pull from nostalgia alone?

No lie, when I read your post, my mind flashed back to me being a little boy and watching that episode, literally put me in the moment. I remembered where I was, how I felt watching it, all of that. It was an incredible deja vu feeling :wow:
