X-Men: The Animated Series is getting a revival on Disney+.
According to
TheWrap, the new show is called
X-Men '97, picking up where the original 1990s series left off. Marvel Studios is producing the series, with Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith and Alyson Court all reprising their roles. Disney+ itself
confirmed the news with a classic Wolverine meme.
While Marvel's mutants have starred in numerous animated projects over the years, the first full-blown series to hit screens was
X-Men (aka
X-Men: The Animated Series), which aired on Fox Kids for 76 episodes across five seasons from 1992 to 1997. The series -- which is currently available to stream in its entirety on Disney+ -- remains a beloved classic to this day, and was even credited with setting the wheels in motion for 20th Century Fox's live-action
X-Men film franchise.
X-Men: The Animated Series was followed by
X-Men: Evolution, which ran on Kids' WB for 52 episodes across four seasons from 2000 to 2003.
Evolution was itself followed by
Wolverine and the X-Men, which ran on Nicktoons for a single, 26-episode season in 2009. Like
The Animated Series,
X-Men: Evolution and
Wolverine and the X-Men are now currently available to stream on Disney+.
Amid The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of 20th Century Fox and the advent of the Disney+ streaming service, there has been much speculation regarding what the on-screen future hold for Marvel's mutants, with rumors of a new
X-Men cartoon -- possibly a reboot of the original
Animated Series -- having circulated as of late.
The Marvel Studios animated series
X-Men '97 is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2023.
