Early 'Dark Phoenix' Trailer Reaction Praises The 'X-Men' Film's Tone

20th Century Fox showed off the first trailer for the next X-Men film, Dark Phoenix at CineEurope 2018 and the first reaction promises what sounds like a lighter tone compared to previous films in the franchise.

According to Kinometro writer Artur Chachelov, the trailer showed off a lighter tone than what’s been seen in other upcoming X-Men films such as New Mutants:

“But the fantastic action thriller DARK PHOENIX (in Russia – from February 14) looks better than expected. At the presentation, his new trailer was shown, getting rid of the excessive gloom of the teaser and clearly positioning the project as a direct continuation of the X-MEN . In addition, other projects of the Marvel universe – NEW MUTANTS and GAMBIT – were announced in this block , but there are no materials on them yet.”
Simon Kinberg makes his directorial debut with the film as the franchise takes another stab at the Dark Phoenix saga, the comic book storyline where Jean Grey struggled to control and succumbed to the Phoenix Force within.

In addition to directing, Kinberg is also producing the film with Hutch Parker and Lauren Schuler Donner. Kinberg himself has been involved with the franchise for just over a decade, having written the main installments of the ongoing film series since The Last Stand with the exception of X-Men: First Class. He has also produced Deadpool 2 and is producing The New Mutants.

The film stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Evan Peters, Kodi-Smit McPhee, Alexandra Shipp, Lamar Johnson, Sophie Turner, and Jessica Chastain.

Dark Phoenix hits theaters February 14, 2019.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix Re-Shoots Expected to Span Three Months

Disney may be in the midst of acquiring Fox’s assets, something that may just end up with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four coming back home to Marvel Studios, but the deal isn’t done just yet. It may have been officially approved, but there are still legal proceedings to go through. But while Marvel Cinematic Universe fans await news that their favorite mutants will join the Avengers on the screen, Fox is still moving full steam ahead with its current slate of X-Men films.

Although Dark Phoenix was originally slated for a November 2018 release, the film was eventually pushed back to February. Then, at one point, there was concern that both Josh Boone’s The New Mutants and Simon Kinberg’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix had been pulled from Fox’s schedule, but that worry has recently been put to rest when IMAX confirmed the two films’ release dates in 2019.

It’s been known, for a while now, that re-shoots for Dark Phoenix would take place — we just simply didn’t know to what extent. Even the star of the film, Sophie Turner, said last month that she didn’t know what exactly was being re-shot. Well now, thanks to a report from the Quebec Film and Television Council courtesy of Montreal newspaper La Presse, it appears the X-Men: Dark Phoenix re-shoots will be quite extensive.

Acoording to Pierre Moreau, the president of the QFTC, the production of the film is heading back to Montreal for three whole months. “They are re-shooting the ending of the film,” Moreau said. It’s unclear what exactly Moreau means by the ending of the film, but given that he says the re-shoots are planned for three months, it’s possible that the entire third act of Dark Phoenix is going through an overhaul.

X-Men: Days of Future Past, Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix have all shot in Montreal, Canada for the past few years, the city becoming the unofficial home of the X-Men. While it was believed that the Dark Phoenix shoot was over, it now appears as if all the main actors from the film, from Jennifer Lawrence to Michael Fassbender, will return to the city for the re-shoots.

I swear one day we’ll be smarter about who we get our news from. Maybe four more years of trump?

Exclusive: No, ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Is Not Undergoing Three Months of Reshoots
Contrary to reports, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is not going back in for an extensive round of reshoots, we at Collider can confirm. Earlier this year, the X-Men sequel was pulled off of its November 2018 release date and pushed to February 2019. After test screenings, it was determined the film needed some additional photography (as is routine when it comes to studio blockbusters), but owing to the busy schedules of the A-list cast, the production couldn’t assemble everyone in time to meet the November release date, so the date was pushed.

Now that the additional photography on Dark Phoenix is poised to take place later this year, Montreal outlet LaPresse reported that the film would be undergoing “three months” of photography, which would suggest extensive changes to longtime X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg’s directorial debut.

Sources close to the production of Dark Phoenix tell Collider that this report is erroneous. The film is indeed going back for additional photography in Montreal, but it’s only scheduled to last two and a half weeks. That’s a pretty standard amount of time for a major blockbuster, and is on par with the time spent on additional photography for Marvel Studios movies like Thor: Ragnarokand Black Panther.

Our sources tell us that the additional photography will involve some additional action in the film’s third act, a couple of new scenes, and adding some shots for existing scenes. So no, contrary to rumors, this is not a major overhaul.

2.5 weeks of reshoots not 3 months.
