He may not have put butts in seats, and yes he was a transitional champion during all 3 of this reigns to say the least  but if you look at all the Raws in 98'-99' he was pretty over and was ALWAYS in the mix with the major players during that era, feuds, with Rock, Austin, Triple H, Undertaker, Big Show, Kane and he didn't look weak in comparisons to them during their feuds, not to mention he was good on the mic, that has to count for something :yeshrug:

Also, judging from ratings in 2012, CM Punk is exactly putting butts in seats, but wouldn't you still call him one of the MAJOR players in whatever you wanna call this terrible era of wrestling we live in??

He was decently over....all of those PPV matches, they were all marking out for the Corporate Champ and Austin. They were dead for him at Summerslam 99. He went over Taker a few times but that was it. He was a crash test dummy all the time.

Mick Foley winning the title changed the tide of that era. IIRC his win on Jan 4 was the first time Raw beat Nitro in the ratings and Nitro never won again.

One great reliable foil for all main eventers of the era

Made HHH

Had one of the Attitude Era defining matches with Taker at HIAC, and with Rock in the I Quit match.

Had a damn good feud with the Rock. Rock and Sock Connection.

Mick's insistence on not going away has a lot of people jaded but you can't deny his contributions.

What? Austin changed the tide after two weeks after Mania 14....almost 9 months before any of that. That's when Raw was getting higher ratings. WCW was falling off huge by the time Rock got that belt. Tyson and Austin were the flip over....not no damn Foley. WTF:laugh:

Ah well, guess I recalled wrong. It happens. But I'm like a McMahon dammit, I won't let facts get in the way of a good narrative.

I was in the building at summer slam 99. It hurts to admit how pro HHH Minneapolis as a whole was that night. Austin was kinda stale by then. foley was pretty much meh at the time, when he won there was a general :why: vibe all around. This I remember.
