And that's why black culture is so stale....
It still amazes me how we as a people can have so much influence on culture around the world and yet nothing out there seems to be for "us"

I miss seeing real Black people, black music and dancing and black comedy on tv. Seems like right after 1999/2000 everything got shutdown. It was like a new integration or something. Seems like all the new all Black TV programming is some extreme kooning.
Remeber all the Black Shows in the 1990s??

Naw...a lot of it was real. These were segments of black people that always existed but were not showcased to the rest of society. Now, we can agree that the majority of black people were not living like the Cosby's but families like those existed and it was important for those that didn't to see a highly educated black family. Phylicia Rashad grew up in 50s and 60s in 3rd Ward Houston when it was the center of black middle class in Houston. By the 80s, the government turned the neighborhood into a crime infested hood. The family life she had was very similar to what she had growing up.
On the flip side, a lot the shows in the 80s and 90s were part of racial showcasing as well, basically a way to distract black people who are progressive, middle class and educated from caring much about the plight of lower/underclass black people. The 80s and 90s just so happens to be the time when black people were under continual attack by the government who created terrible conditions in the black community. That whole era was hell for black communities. The shows were a distraction to control the progressive set of black people from being active against the government. That is why we had so many black shows. It doesn't make sense to give that many shows to a people that make up just 12% of the population unless you have an agenda. I keep telling people that the Media is the 4th and most important branch of the government.

it all went downhill post 2005Yup, you had more predominately black shows on tv and more black films in theaters. It's crazy how there was a lot more diversity in the 90's compared to now, it's like things are going backwards.
We got ryan cooglerYeah, Thanks to superhero movies andactors refusing to step off the spotlight, we have this influx of actors trying to find a way to eat. That is why we can never find another young Spike Lee or John Singleton in today's ADD market.
Oh and BTW...I think black sitcoms fell off sometime around the late 90s...like someone said--you'll never have another era of the Cosby Show, A Different World, Martin, and Living SIngle those days are over...it is what it is man...
But some of yall are naming those crap WB sitcomsthe writing and acting in alot of those was pure garbage (minus The Waynes Bros Show...that was actually pretty hilarious)
Its the same thing with movies too. On one hand, you have blacks gaining ownership. Tyler Perry would never have had his own movie studios and distribution 20 years ago. But I feel like the soul is gone from our movies. I can't put it into words really. I just know when I watch older movies, then watch newer black films, the feeling isn't the same. And its not nostalgia.
