dope name :obama:

:jbhmm: if i ever have a son, i'm contemplating on naming him Ikenna. i also like the meaning of the name.

I don't know about other cultures but in the Igbo culture, people tend to name their children in relating to the circumstances around his/her birth. They don't give them a name just because they 'like' it.

"African"

Too broad, it's not like the whole continent has only one language and/or way of naming.

If you don't know where in Africa your ancestors were from, giving your kids a random African name and claiming it's because you're doing it to honor your heritage is lame.

Having said that, I won't have kids but hypothetically yeah, I'd consider a properly chosen African name.

There's a Swahili one my pops wanted to give me. I forget it tho it means king, might give it to my future son or pic a Ghanaian or Nigerian name

mfalme is Swahili for king.

in my culture you can name several ways. you can name according to the circumstance the person was born. Eg in the morning, during the rain etc. mine's Omondi cause I was born in the morning.
You can also name the child after someone else in that persons honor. plus they kinda think you capture traits of the person you were born after.

So yeah my kids will prolly have at minimum a last African name and middle name. and one name will belong to my father for atleast one boy and mother for at least one girl for continuity

We are not African we are American. We've had European names for hundreds of years they practical belong to us.

I kind of agree with this sentiment but I feel no pride in my last name. The only reason I don't take serious consideration of dropping my surname is I will get dirty looks from family.

precisely this, my middle name is igbo what most people do for their first name though is to usually give the child a religious name that relates to a saint or some kind of virtue, i think me and my sister are the first in our family to have broken this norm my mom gave us straight english names.
