I respect peoples opinions in here but can we be realistic and stop the playoff talk. It ends up being a lot of the same folks that wanna blow things up when the results don't match expectations. I know unexpected seasons are possible, I was a kid when Carlisle took the pistons to 50 wins with basically the same team (besides cliff and jon barry) that had 32 the year before. Expecting playoffs is wild as hell though man.
My opinion is if everyone stayed healthy last season and still made the bagley trade, they would have been in the 5-7 worst record range instead of bottom 3 territory. All of us as fans make projections and completely ignore injuries being inevitable. Some teams can handle losing players while others can not and thats why i particularly liked the Burks and Noel move as they acquired those two the same day as letting go Frank Jackson and Garza. That is a massive upgrade in talent, veteran presence and most importantly, DEPTH. Noel will be good for 40-50 games and thats all this team needs while statistically, burks will be the best shooter this team has had other than kennard in over a decade and will both will likely be involved in trade deadline talks for contenders.
I sometimes let these analytic GEEKS who avoid watching games and rely on percentages briefly sway my true feelings on draft picks but I will always go with the eye test and the top dawg archetype that puts fear in your opponent when you pick top 3. I was happy Detroit didn't fall in the top 3 if that meant drafting Jabari or Chet. I don't care if they turn into good players, i know they will, but this is not what this iteration of Detroit basketball needs right now. Your team is entirely too trash to consider fit instead of grabbing the best talent and making moves around that. At the same time, I know the pistons were lucky the teams in front of them invested a ton in guard play already because Jaden Ivey is clearly better than top 4 ranking he consistently stayed in. Paolo and Ivey are the type of players you always have to go for when your team is that shytty.
With his shooting and defense, Jabari Smith will end up being an elite piece on a winning team, but even in summer league you see whats going on offensively and what these geeks tried to make you ignore. Non nba players are playing close to Jabari knowing hes not going to create for himself. Surely this will look different when he has the rest of his talented teammates around him but I would rather not invest in a top pick on a player that relies on other talent to open up his talents in the way Jabari will need it. Him going #1 never made sense to me
IMO The Kings/Pistons Keegan/Ivey stuff was a mix of behind the scenes agent posturing (Ivey and Haliburton share the same agent and was not letting Ivey go there) and Pistons did a great job putting the Keegan love out there in case Ivey got chosen by sac anyway. The reality is Keegan is going to be a very good player and worthy of top 8 big board ranking but is defintely not the 4th best prospect and not what detroit needed right now in comparison. If Saddiq wasnt on the team maybe the case could be greater, but a starting 3/4 of Bey and Keegan is very limiting and less dynamic than what Ivey brings. While watching the Magic SL game yesterday, it was very telling that the Kings staff had 3+ chances to create a play for Keegan to win the game and simply avoided it. That is what I look for in a top 4 pick and it admits to everyone you view him as an elite roleplayer at best. No thank you from Detroit.
