what does any of this line of discussion have to do with box office draws?

use of social media dilluding boxoffice draw? nicole ritchie discussion in a thread about will smith's box office power?

:what:

wanna know box office power? the only difference between your generic action movie in redbox or netflix that you dont' even add to your cue, and "John Wick" or "The Equalizier" is Denzel and Keanu reeves. thats it. the idea that 'hollywood's stars' are dying is silly as hell.

It's all about seeing the people you like in something you want to see, that's it. Just putting them in any ole thing and expecting it will be a hit won't work anymore. And good word of mouth

when has that ever worked? in the history of movies?

during the studio system breh. where stars were forced to do whatever the studio wanted.

@Cobratron pointed out the way studios used to work during the 90s..for example: Sleepless in Seattle and You've got Mail. Basically the same damn movie with the same two actors but because those two actors were tom cruise and meg ryan, you've got mail was still a hit movie even though it was damn near the same exact movie.

He's the sidekick but he's not in the same movie is my point. Ride Along isn't a carbon copy of the wedding ringer, which still made less. You've got mail is a carbon copy of sleepless in Seattle. The only difference is one uses the telephone and the other uses the internet

Niche movies tho breh. You know what sells soccer moms? 50 shades of grey. I feel like you're looking at this like we're still in the 90s or 80s or even farther back. You know what else sold soccer moms? Sex and the city..and Bridesmaids. And no one in Bridesmaids is what I would call a huge huge huge star. Famous? Yes most definitely, but huge star? Not at all. Again, stories, concepts, characters that you can relate to, movies based on established material, sequels..that's what sells movies now. Who was the biggest star in 50 shades? What was the biggest attraction? The title.

When the hangover came out, I'd argue that the biggest star in the movie just by name alone was Heather Graham. She was barely in the movie and it made household names out of at least two members of the main cast but not everyone flocks to see every flick Bradley Cooper or Zach Galifianakis is in; they've got hits to their name since the hangover and some misses to their name as well and it's all based on if people want to see them in that particular movie. People used to see movies just to really see these stars because of the lack of accessibility to them; that's not a problem anymore. So if I don't want to see The Words with Zoe Saldana but still want to see Zoe Saldana, guess what? I can google her, I can watch clips of her on youtube, or I can just wait till she does another star trek or guardians movie or something else that I'm more interested in than The Words.

Oh and if we're talking about soccer moms, who was the biggest demo that wen to see Focus over the weekend? Older women. They came out breh, but the problem is, there earning power wasn't high enough to do what the studio wanted the movie to do or to stop articles about this being written. Those same crowds came out for sex and the city but in much higher numbers
That is very true. It's easier to see the kibbles and bits online. My problem is that what has changed the Smith can't get more then 40 million for a weekend box office opening? You're right, studio are going to say this is a problem? But about we people get hero fatigue, for example in 5 years? It could happen, it could not.

I disagree. This was a weak box office for will.

Everything goes in cycles breh. there will be something else to come along. Hollywood always goes through periods of things. And Will couldn't get it because, at least to me, the movie didn't look that interesting. You gotta put people in stuff people want to see because I don't need to pay to see Will anymore; I can see Will whenever I want. If I'm going to spend good money to see him in something, it better be in something that looks interesting

in the 90's Will didnt have to deal with the bootlegging like he does now......so if a movie looks just average (which I think it does) and nt a "must see on the big screen" I think alot of people are content with waiting to watch at their own home, if its a bootleg or just waiting for On Demand or early digital. The movies numbers will be fine in the end, its just tough to compare now a days in TV and music to late 90's as far as sales etc.

Agreed.

These days, unless it's some huge blockbuster/comicbook/franchise movie, most people are just like :ld: I'll catch it on Netflix or download the bootleg. Not too much motive to go to the movies unless it's a movie with a lot of special effects.
