Yeah that's the thing though, hollywood wants that easy name to sell the the soccer moms. Having just two or three big names is a problem because the audience gets fatigued.
Niche movies tho breh. You know what sells soccer moms? 50 shades of grey. I feel like you're looking at this like we're still in the 90s or 80s or even farther back. You know what else sold soccer moms? Sex and the city..and Bridesmaids. And no one in Bridesmaids is what I would call a huge huge huge star. Famous? Yes most definitely, but huge star? Not at all. Again, stories, concepts, characters that you can relate to, movies based on established material, sequels..that's what sells movies now. Who was the biggest star in 50 shades? What was the biggest attraction? The title.
When the hangover came out, I'd argue that the biggest star in the movie just by name alone was Heather Graham. She was barely in the movie and it made household names out of at least two members of the main cast but not everyone flocks to see every flick Bradley Cooper or Zach Galifianakis is in; they've got hits to their name since the hangover and some misses to their name as well and it's all based on if people want to see them in that particular movie. People used to see movies just to really see these stars because of the lack of accessibility to them; that's not a problem anymore. So if I don't want to see The Words with Zoe Saldana but still want to see Zoe Saldana, guess what? I can google her, I can watch clips of her on youtube, or I can just wait till she does another star trek or guardians movie or something else that I'm more interested in than The Words.
Oh and if we're talking about soccer moms, who was the biggest demo that wen to see Focus over the weekend? Older women. They came out breh, but the problem is, there earning power wasn't high enough to do what the studio wanted the movie to do or to stop articles about this being written. Those same crowds came out for sex and the city but in much higher numbers
