Nah, whether people see it or not, it DEFINITELY goes down in the USA and has for decades.

I honestly didn't know.

Maybe its more secretive here because I cant remember ever hearing a black american woman talk about bleaching her skin.
But I've heard PLENTY of Nigerian women talk about it in the open, even compare products. Mainly older women, 35+

Thanks for educating me

Yeah that has to be main difference is how open or secretive different cultures are about it.
I'm not going to act like Nigerian women are "proud" of it or anything, but they aren't really that secretive about it.

I'm strictly talking about the older Nigerian women, the younger ones in the US don't seem to bleach that much in the open (who knows what goes on behind closed doors)

Thanks. The two differences between how it's done here as opposed to Caribbean and in Africa are
1)it's regulated by the FDA and the products are sold legally in stores .....the lightening agents in the products are under a certain %. Overseas, and in some stores catering to Black immigrants here they sell underground products that contain higher concentration of the chemicals. Stronger stuff creates greater potential for skin and health problems.

2) Still a stigma to skin lightening here (as it should be) so people here won't speak openly of it,whereas in other places that stigma has long since been gone. Again..people are using stronger products for quicker results...they aren't trying to gradually lighten so that others don't detect it, they want to bleach right away. Many here can honestly say that they've never encountered a person who spoke of bleaching or who used bleaching products, but those products are a huge market over here. Again, the Black press has written about this extensively over the decades, and the iconic Black media has carried ads for these products for over 60 years. Sometimes the ads used euphemisms like "skin softening" during the "Black is Beautiful" era but most are openly marketed as lightening agents.
