Black people have a tough time understanding self identification. This is largely due to the fact that black people still suffer from mental colonialism and believe that whatever white people view them as, then that's what you are.

i grew up in a largely spanish-speaking area and us non-spanish speakers called them spanish cause they were all from different countries all over latin america. easier than saying salvatruca, honduran, colombian, bolivian, etc. naive, yes, but not malicious. kids tend to simplify matters sometimes. and they seem to have adopted that term to mean spanish-speaking americans. but only really in reference to non-spanish speaking peoples.

spanish, latino and hispanic have become synonyms for each other in recent time.

I'm latino and I call myself spanish sometimes just because everyone does, it's not a big deal. We say it because of the language we speak, not because of our ancestry, not all latinos are even descended from Spain but the language most definitely is. But when getting technical i'd like to call myself Latino before anything.
