I'm still mad as hell Fincher didn't go through with Utopia on HBO.
I love Westworld, but Utopia would have been an instant hit that could help them post-Thrones:francis:

They passed on Guillermo Del Toro's live adaptation of Monster which would've probably been a classic. I'm interested in this Watchmen adaptation they're working on, doe:manny:

No show is. GOT is the MJ,LeBron,Babe Ruth, Tyson of TV. It doesnt mean theres anything wrong with being Dream, or young Shaq, or Holyfield

That's saying that shows cant reach GoT levels which is false. Walking dead did it. Breaking bad did it. LOST was the originator.

the truth is netflix shows and movies don't have legs or "water cooler talk" in part because 97% of their content is garbage. no one is rushing to talk about stranger things, the crown or glow after watching an episode or season.

to this day the wire is still talked about. sopranos is always in the talks of classic must watch shows and their recent IPs like true detective s1 and s3 are classics. then you have the middle of the road shows that are still great like insecure, barry, succession, etc. i can go on but you get the point. netflix have a content problem.

Breaking Bad did it past the halfway point of the series. Ironically, it was being put on Netflix that got a bunch of people aware of the show. Walking Dead was a legit mainstream success, but it never got the accolades for quality. LOST was legit when it came to the water cooler buzz, but by its end it wasn't seeing the popularity/buzz it had in its prime.

True. But at the same time GoT didn't reach it's peak either until later seasons. TWD was putting up higher numbers in it's earlier years.

Im just saying GoT while it seems to be the last of it's kind, It doesn't "have" to be. If a show is of high quality for multiple seasons the word of mouth will get the show to where it needs to be. Mr.Robot could of been next up but it's ending too soon.

it is not saying that :what:
It's saying there are some shows that are going to be huge and classic and bigger than others but it doesn't mean you failed if you're not them.
How many of those shows aired at the same time and were hot at the same exact time?

With 'Game of Thrones,' HBO is playing for another 'True Blood'

Is A Game of Thrones the most eagerly anticipated TV show ever?

The show was highly anticipated before it even premiered. By the time Ned got offed, the show was a mainstream hit. It was so popular it got people reading books. Books, breh:damn:I personally hope that GoT isn't the only one of it's kind because I want more piff to watch, but I have to call it how I see it.

"For how much Netflix spends (of investor money) on award campaigns, it has to be a thorn in its side as for them, HBO, Hulu, Amazon and even Disney (NYSE:DIS) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) – it’s all about prestige and bragging rights. While Netflix broke through the wall, it’s Hulu and Amazon who have enjoyed the spoils thus"

that line shows this was a hit piece written in bad faith.
where is the lie tho

People talk about Netflix shows/movies/docs all the time :what:

The cast of On my block has multiple interviews with 1M views.

Everyone was talking about Bird Box over the holidays.

I could go on....:stopitslime:
nah, the way they're talked about is different, unless it's a slow burn show where WOM catapults it over time, netflix shows tend to drop and have about a 10 day buzz and then it's over. most folks watch it within the 2 week window of its premier and discuss, those who lag tend to watch at such different times, there's "no one" to discuss with anymore.

with weekly shows, you get a much longer range of converge and excitement. got radio shows spending monday morning talking about it (i'm talking sports, news, music, etc...they all spend a segment or two on it), various podcasts that drop throughout the week, tons of articles/recaps from news/media websites and blogs, social mediasphere, message boards....then we get to do it all over again week after week for 8-18 weeks depending on the show. netflix doesn't have movies or shows that get 8+ weeks of "all eyes on me discussion", especially not with the entire season drop model.

Game of Thrones is only as popular as it is because it had the framework of the greatest fantasy series ever written (yes, I'm a big fan of Tolkien's books, but knew immediately that GRRM had surpassed him when I read A Storm of Swords back in 2003; I posted mad shyt on the Westeros forums back in the day talking about this series in film or TV would be gigantic). HBO will never be that lucky again. Netflix has nothing to worry about. Watch what happens when people get bored of the Game of Thrones prequels and spin-offs that will have none of the magic. See what happened when Weiss and Benioff had no more dialogue and plot to crib from Martin? They at least had his notes and a definitive ending. That blank page is gonna hit them hard.

netflix has tried the weekly formula for some of the lesser shows
they need to try it for their bigger shows...not even sure what those are now. OITNB and HOC were the two shows that catapulted them into a must-have subscription, they put netflix original content on the map, but both have lost their momentum with HOC being over and OITNB heading into its last season. Stranger Things looked like it had the juice, but the continual delays of season 3 and lukewarm reception of season 2 proves otherwise. the rest of their shows are niche...maybe that works, but between not having a megahit, not maintaining the attention of audiences for chunks of time, continually losing/not renewing rights to content, the onslaught of competition and the likely oncoming subscription burnout, Netflix has likely peaked
