"I didn't know" is never a good excuse for bad behavior. Although he admited he knew for at least the 8 years he was engaged to be married.

"excuse"? what if it's true?

whether or not self-deception is virtuous, doesn't mean it's not reality

Doesn't matter if its true, you're still held accountable. You can't tell the judge "I didn't know"

The question is was this dude "brave" or a "hero"

You can't be a "brave hero" while lying to the world and yourself. Coming clean from that lie when it's personaly beneficial AFTER hurting others and becoming successful doesn't make you a "brave hero" either.

If a straight man strung along a woman for eight years for ANY reason whether he didn't know he was or not. He would not get a pass for it and damn sure wouldn't be called a hero for finally telling the truth.

how does that work, when he was the 'first'? "hero" or not, he's the guy. should they treat him like a villain? ignore it? or try to make the best of it?
:shaq2:

Word? Try to make the best of it?????...that kind of pragmatism is unwise...this situation would be the equivalent of a guy like bernie madoff fleeing to Rio de janeiro and then confessing that there he stole peoples pensions and apologising knowing damn well he wont be extradited...

would you call that courage???

why does anyone feel the need to be "impressed" or "give him props"? :wtf:

if you don't want to get caught up in it, then don't

We all got caught up in it..its being pushed on all the news networks,he has the SI cover and the article i posted..why does he get an SI cover anyway? his stats are terrible
2012-13 Statistics
PPG1.1 RPG1.60 APG0.2 EFF+ 2.21
and he obviously "came clean" at the most convenient point of his career and if you read the whole article i posted with a discerning mind you would see that theres nothing courageous or praiseworthy here.

Stop being dense. Being gay wouldn't be the crime. Taking advantage of another human beings life would be the crime. And saying "I didn't know" wouldn't get you off the hook.

we're talking about complex psychological issues here, not ignorance of the law. you were the one that wanted to introduce a judge and jail into the conversation

huh? it's more about how I expect the media to handle a story like this. I don't expect them to demonize the first openly gay NBA player. in fact, given our modern knee-jerk gotcha society, it's the kind of thing where saying the wrong thing could be the end of your career

I don't really watch TV or read SI. although I saw something about all this on TV the other night at the bar

One more time "complex physiological issues" are never a passable excuse for poor behavior. They could be true and really have an impact, but at the end of the day each individual is responsible for his own actions. I bring up the judge because its an example. People are not excused for their actions due to societal pressures, no matter how "complex"

Gay people are human, they make mistakes like the rest of us. They shouldn't be applauded or called hero's for actions that the rest of us would be frowned upon for.

Take of your :cape: and see it for what it is. This dude is no hero.

they're not? I'll just go full-retard and ask if "complex physiological issues" are ever a passable excuse for a retard's poor behavior?

I didn't say he was a "hero". in fact I said:
