I'm not defending anyone. He claims he was lying to himself, and his former fiancee claims she never suspected anything. Social and psychological repression can lead to such a situation- if you think otherwise, your understanding of humanity is naive. You seem to be judging him and jumping to conclusions that even his own ex-fiancee hasn't yet, since she seems to be more understanding about it than you are.

Aside from your personal experiences, I don't see any good reason to speculate beyond the facts at hand.
