Why is Warren G so underrated as a producer?

most of what I was gonna say, has already been said.

im gonna add how g-funk era records didn't get its run, and ended up dying still-born due to the label mergers at def jam.

and the youngns don't know him like that, because he wasn't part of death row, so he doesn't get that iovine legacy stimulus. meanwhile, def jam hardly ever mentions him because they don't want to give props to a west coast rapper for saving their label.

Most producers have a rapper or 2 or more where they can really showcase their production on top-flight albums or songs with the artist.

Quik had 2nd II None, Suga Free, etc., but Quik was also an MC himself. His records were big and great by himself. He was a dual threat.

Warren never had that. Warren had Tha Twinz and Doveshack, but never that star rapper. So, he was pretty much on his own. He is not really a rapper.

Snoop was that rapper, but Snoop wound up with Dre.

ehh

warren g was much bigger than dj quik and warren also had a better stable of rappers, altho only one album actually came out of warren's camp.

im guessing dj quik was bigger regionally?? cuz its mainly just the west coast that props dj quik up as an all-time producer and is carrying his legacy. why him and not warren?? or other guys like battlecat. I don't get it.

There was actually five albums from other artists released on G-Funk Music. Twinz, The Dove Shack, Da 5 Footaz, Reel Tight and a singer named Jessica.

Battlecat is a good producer. Been in the game as long or longer than Quik. He had success over the years. I'd put him over Warren too. Interestingly, Snoop worked with Battlecat on solo albums,213, Doggy Angelz, and Eastsidaz albums. Not Warren though. :manny:

Battlecat over Quik? :jbhmm:

Nah, but good call though.

To your earlier point about Warren and Quik, by that logic, 50 was "bigger" than Jay.

50 had a huge 2 album run, and fizzled. Jay did it longer and with much more consistency.

Warren had a huge a debut album and kinda fizzled as the years went on.

Quik did it longer and with more consistency. The quality of Quik's music is just better.

The first 4 albums (really 5)

Quik is the Name
Way 2 Fonky
Safe + Sound
Rhythmalism
Balance + Options
That production/MC run is pretty damn good. :whew:

Quik was a good rapper too, nice flow. Warren was strictly a producer that rapped raps written for him. And of those types, Warren didn't have a vocal presence like Eazy E or Dre.

Not to mention Warren never had a Suga Free or Mauseberg. 2nd II None was better than the Twinz. Plus his work with Toni Tone Tony and Debarge, and mixing work on All Eyez on Me is really why people hold Quik in such high regard.

I say all this as a Warren fan, but without wearing the g-funk era sunglasses.

Warren has had a nice career. He escaped Dre's shadow from the jump and established his own brand by himself on Def Jam of all places. What an odd match. He did it his way and it worked. Made some great music along the way too. :obama:

when talking consistency, I guess you mean out there on the west. cuz quik aint make noise across the board since like his 1st album, which wasn't nearly as big as warren's 1st.

dj quik isn't a good rapper neither. he only sounds hot when hes dissin somebody - and to his credit, hes an all-time great when it comes to diss tracks. I also give quik credit for his voice & vocal presence. but hes not a good rapper breh.

I don't think dj quik's artists were better than warren's either. I wasn't feeling quik's stable at all, but again, I guess its a west coast thing.

They never got there due..................but east coast producers were always better:mjpls:
Nah. West coast is filled with full sounding music played with instruments and deep bass. East coast sounded dusty, hasn’t aged well and is completely dependent on sampling with very little live instruments.

There’s a reason west coast and south production has taken over and has aged gracefully and nobody is making east coast sounding music anymore with any popularity

:mjpls: The South took over.

East Coast production only fell off because no one wants to pay for the clearance. Outside of Dre, nobody is really check for throwback west coast beats.

Warren was one of my favorites. He never really got his props. He seems to be doing well with his BBQ company now. He's the one that brought Nate and Snoop and Dre scooped them out and cast Warren aside. One of the reasons I will always respect Nate is he never stopped working with Warren.

On another note, val young has to be one of my favorites when it comes to hooks
