Why is Warren G so underrated as a producer?

Most producers have a rapper or 2 or more where they can really showcase their production on top-flight albums or songs with the artist.

Dre had his list of proteges.
RZA had Wu-Tang
Primo had Gangstarr, Jeru, etc.

Quik had 2nd II None, Suga Free, etc., but Quik was also an MC himself. His records were big and great by himself. He was a dual threat.

Warren never had that. Warren had Tha Twinz and Doveshack, but never that star rapper. So, he was pretty much on his own. He is not really a rapper.

Snoop was that rapper, but Snoop wound up with Dre.

Warren had an album where he had Bishop Lamont featured heavily on it, then Bishop Lamont is on aftermath working with Dre. :dwillhuh:

Weird.

Dre you could understand exercising tough love on Warren. And Dre was right. Warren G was able to have success on his own.

As far as Snoop, it still is a business. They might have been best friends, just like Daz is Snoop's first cousin, but Snoop knew who really did what during the Chronic and Doggystyle days. Because of that experience, maybe Snoop just never took either of them that seriously. Daz did some cuts on Tha Doggfather, and Snoop saw how that turned out. :snoop:

Plus, once the g-funk era passed, Warren's stardom did too. He still had some good records over the years.

His collaborations with Nate Dogg were just :banderas:

Warren had a beautiful sound. He is not as good as Quik, but he is along the same lines of feel good, live instrumentation, summertime music. Deep base cuts. Some keyboard work. Rhythm guitars and sh*t. :wow:

Yeah hes one of those that people dont realize how much hes done because he doesn't go out of his way to let you know he produced it like some producers.

He is a real humble cat. Much different than Daz.

And Warren accomplished much more without Death Row and Dre, unlike Daz. Daz's best work was with Dre and Death Row (and Quik on AEOM).

Exactly anyone who has ever seen him in an interview knows dude is humble the interview with sway I think a year or two ago is a good example.

I agree 100%

Mostly I blame Snoop cuz he never respected Warren's production like that

Hence that garbage ass 213 album with no Warren G beats

:pacspit:

Warren's first four albums were laced with great production, I still listen to them to this day

I was surprised Snoop even let him on that first Eastsidaz album.... G Child produced a banger... Didn't know he had that hard shyt in him

:ohlawd:

Exactly what I was going to say. Had Warren been able to produce all or at least the bulk of the 213 album he might be more respected as long as he came with his top shyt.

Snoop and Dre didn't seem to respect his contributions on a musical tip and he didn't really produce for anyone outside of his own albums and artists.

He produced for a bunch of different artists in the 90's and 00's. 2Pac, Redman, Knoc-Turn' Al, Kam, Slick Rick, Styles P, Chingy, MC Breed, Mista Grimm, Wale, DFC, Mac Dre, Yo Yo, Shaquille O'Neal, Reel Tight, TQ etc. Who knows, maybe he just asks too much money for his beats?

Nate Dogg was the one who could have blown up with a mostly-produced Warren G album but the label politics would have gotten in the way around 95-96.

People are underestimating how big of a flop "Take a Look Over My Shoulder" really was. That tanked his career for a couple reasons

1) It dropped the same day as "Life After Death" and with Biggie's death 2 weeks before, coupled with 2pac's death in September, no one was checking for Warren G
2) The singles were lackluster. Even though "I Shot The Sheriff" went gold, none of the singles made a big impact
3) The album dropped about 10 months later than it should. Def Jam should have aimed for the summertime when "What's Love Got To Do With It" was being pushed. It wouldn't have been overshadowed as much by Death Row's dominance since AEOM dropped in February and I think the next album they released was the Makaveli album in November

Nah, it isn't money.

Both Dre and Snoop released records on a big scale. Warren wasn't the only one who got that treatment. Daz too later on.

Warren outside of his debut, never reached that level again. He never really had the current trend of sound since that period either. Warren just wasn't producing the in-crowd sound. Might explain why Snoop didn't have Warren producing on the 213 record.

Dre hooked Warren up at least twice. He gave Warren the Game Don't Wait Remix for Warren's 3rd album, and "Lookin at You" beat for the lead single of Warren's 4th album.

Warren G always did what he wanted to do. "Return Of The Regulator" was G-Funk, but the sound was updated and i hoped it would sell more and we could hear similar production on other releases too.

Dre and Warren also produced Phats Bossi's "Through The Rain" together.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the bold.

Warren had his own lane. And as the years progressed, he was more entrenched in that lane.

Have you heard the remixes he made of "Groupie Luv"? I love the original but they were better.

213 - Groupie Luv (G. Funk Remixes)

I wish i still had this single, but i lost it years ago when my old computer broke down.

I always wished he kept all the beats he gave the Twinz, Dove Shack, 5 footaz and just released another solo album in 1995 with the beats he gave them. He wasted alot of dope beats on mediocre artists and ball players :snoop:
