Trump promotes himself as a "no nonsense businessman". That's one of the most effective marketing strategies for American people. Americans have been duped into believing that "no nonsense businessmen" are on our side and want to save the country. However, people often forget that a lot of it is just clever marketing and doesn't apply to reality.
Look at Kevin O'Leary for instance. Dude basically ran his initial company(The Learning Company) into bankruptcy and practically destroyed it but managed to bail out and move onto other ventures in business and entertainment while playing up his persona as a "no nonsense CEO." And people in the U.S. started fawning over him because they love his persona more than his actual business record. Kevin also ran as a Conservative in Canada too.
Trump essentially caught lightning in a bottle with the 2017-2019 economy. The economy was already rebounding during Obama's 2nd term in the mid-2010's and Trump was able to acquire it when becoming President and claiming that it's relative stability was solely due to his own governance despite not even being in office that long. Notice that Trump fans love to ignore 2020 too where COVID threw everything off and set things back. People seriously downplay how impactful COVID has been on a global scale and that a lot of the inflation we have is a result of the pandemic and late stage capitalism.
So, Trump is perceived as the "lesser evil" because of striking gold in 2017-2019 and taking sole credit for it and his amazing branding as a "no nonsense businessman."
Trump is like that retired athlete who won a championship a long time ago and still talks about how no modern athlete can compete with him because of that feat. In reality, the 2025 Project is he no joke and Trump still caters mostly to angry White men and Boomers who blame Blacks and immigrants for just about everything.
