Soldier
not redeemed with gold but with His Blood
I think a major problem with the modern NBA is the player-based fandom that has seemingly taken over the sport. The amount of people who support a team and watch their individual games are dropping, fans are instead following players around to which ever team they play for.
I also think the Instagram-ification of the league doesn’t help because obviously there are many people that almost never watch full NBA games but instead they prefer to watch highlights on the Bleacher Report IG feed. It’s great that highlights are readily available like that, though I definitely feel like a lot of people feel the need not to watch full games as a result.
Basketball is not a tribal sport like baseball/football/hockey/soccer are.
That's definitely a factor too. The NFL is seemingly impervious to this (probably because it's the most tribalistic sport), whereas a star-driven and player’s league like the NBA has suffered from the lack of a true monoculture. Jordan and the Bulls were basically the Beatles in the 1990s; that's not something that could really happen again today in 2024.
And this is across popular and mainstream culture today. There’s less of a monoculture and therefore less myth making with guys like Jordan. Even with movie stars there’s not really anybody that can really command the box office. Same thing with artists. There’s no modern artists in music right now who can reach everyone and get love from every demographic and generation like the Beatles, Bob Marley, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Lionel Richie, Rolling Stones, Queen, Louis Armstrong, Stevie wonder, micheal Jackson, Prince, etc. Don’t tell me about post Malone, Morgan wallen or Travis Scott. Or Drake/The Weeknd. Or even Beyoncé/Taylor Swift/Rihanna/Dua Lipa.
