Why hasn't a shooting guard ever been drafted 1st overall in the NBA?

It's the position that requires the least of the 5. All you traditionally ask for of a two is shooting. You want passing, speed and defense from the point, slashing, defense and rebounding from the 3. And the four and five are obvious.

Cody Zeller will probably go ahead of him just because Ben Howland might not acquiesce to Shabazz's strengths offensively. The system's so rigid. Now if Shabazz goes nuts on D, that will be huge and the comp he'll be facing in the Pac-12 ain't shyt so he'll look awesome on that end of the court.

Iverson was NOT drafted to be a point guard. He was a scorer at GT. If you though he was gonna be a pg in the NBA then u didnt watch his college career. Someone like J Kidd or Andre Miller was a point guard coming out.

And it is just simply weird that no shooting guard has been drafted first. No matter how weak the position is, or people consider it to be, it's just strange that not one has been drafted first overall when we've had decades worth of drafts and there are only five positions, just from a mathematical perspective. But when you think about it there are only a handful of shooting guards who were even thought to have a shot at being the #1 pick.

This. Also timing is an issue as well. Mike just happened to come out the same year you had Dream and Bowie in the draft. Kobe came out of HS when HS players were still an unproven commodity. If Kobe goes to college and stays for at least two years he is likely the top pick in 98 (hopefully the Clippers wouldn't have been that dumb) or 99 or 2000. Now that I think about it most top SGs are guys who exceeded pre-draft expectations (MJ, Kobe, Wade, Dumars).

NO....iverson was a dominant player at the college level who had the ball in his hands at all times, that does not make neccessarily make him a point guard. How are J Kidd and Iverson PGs but play the game at completely opposite ends of the spectrum??

Again positions arent easily defined, their positions are the role that they play within the game for the system the team has set up. I dont understand what is so hard to understand about this? We just group players together cause it makes it easier to have these stupid arguments about who is the best SG or SF.

Arguing AI was never drafted as a PG in the NBA is the same as arguing that LeBron was never drafted as a PG in the NBA and he was.

Anyways to answer the question, there has never been a SG deserving of the #1 overall pick in any of the drafts
