Since this thread is based on a hot take, I'll derail the topic a bit and say that I prefer Vol. 1 and 4:44 over Black Album by a hair. :whoa:

Not 4:44… but Vol 1 I’ll take by a mile over Black Album. It has its missteps but “Million and One”, “Streets Is Watching”, “Where I’m From”, “You Must Love Me”… top 10 Jay songs for me.

And f**k it, just cause I never ever eeem to hear anyone say it… “Real N*ggas” is my joint…

Vol. 1 just seemed to have harder hitting tracks with a smoother flow.

Black Album has less lows though undeniably.

Shiiiiiiit, not even Janelle Monáe’s perfect t*ts could unite this site, but ANYTHING Pac or Nas does :snoop:

It's overrated af...

Hola Hovito = trash
H to the izzo = was trash from the day it came out, real heads know
Girls x3 = meh...especially when I found out the beat was originally made for Ghostface and was wasted on this microwave "for the ladies" soft ish
Jigga that nikka = whack

These 4 tracks in particular hold it back...

U Don't Know is the only BANGER on the album... The lyrics were dope, wasn't RD level, but still dope. Production was dope outside of the Timbaland & Trackmasters mircorowave stuff

Overall it's a 4/5 album. Dope, classic, but not some ALL-TIME classic in the same vein as OB4CL, RTD, RD, The Chronic, 36 Chambers and other top 20 albums.

I haven't listen to Stillmatic in a long ass time, but I always preferred The Blueprint to stillmatic so I'm not some Nas dikkrider with blind hate.

This notion the BP was carried by production is bulletpoint Number 1 of hate lol

the album is one of the most quoted albums ever. to be one of the most quoted albums ever means your lyrics have to be kind of good lol

Beats have feelings and stories on its own....even Jay-Z admitted it during the black album. Flow and lyrics must compliment the beat.

So if you have song concepts... find a beat that matches that vibe you want to convey.

The beat on Lyrical Exercise was made for the word play and lyric choices he displayed. People on this board say this was one of only a couple good tracks on the album....but those soul beats on the overwhelming majority of the album lends itself to matter of fact heartfelt kinda lyrics and wordplay.

You know.
Allegedly,...Lupe wrote the only good record on this album.

Album is carried more by the idea.
it was rhe most publicized anything released on 9/11.
Plus still marketed after 9/11.

Yet the best albums released on 9/11 in store any genre.
were tool laterals [arguable best rock album ever made] and system of a down[arguable best rapping released in a rock context but not rap rock...it is system of a down. Which is like gwar without the costumes].

Jayz's Blueprint is the pr social safe zone for America for 9/11. The same way fab was marketed as the mtv American motif rapper for can't deny it because of the American flag motif in the video.
In pr they try to make Blueprint into the period piece of 9/11.
With jayz being arguably the best pr'd person in rap history.
It is ambitious none the least.

Yet not indicative of the truth.
Like most of jayz's revisionist.
to the victor goes the spoils style of pr.
