Let me ask you something Kev. Lets say you're at the store... you've decided you're gonna buy a new pair of shoes, so you're at Foot Locker or where ever you kids buy shoes. You go in, and you see a pair you like, and it looks perfect! Except... then you notice something on the side. A small scuff on the toe of the shoe. So you ask a worker, "hey I really like these shoes, but there's a scuff on them, do you have another pair in my size." He replies "Well, the rest of the shoe is flawless, just focus on THAT instead of that small mark on the shoe. It's not that bad." Now are you going to be satisfied with that answer?

I know this is kind of a dumb analogy, but in my opinion that shoe is society, and religion is that small blemish on it. There are undoubtedly some benefits to religion, but personally I think society would be better if people looked at morality from a humanist approach. People could make moral judgement based on reason, and empathy, rather than some authoritarian figure dictating what's right and what's wrong. Maybe that's completely unrealistic, and some people wouldn't do good for the sake of good, I don't know. But I do think, as a whole, a religious mindset has done more harm than good to humanity ... whether it's worshiping a god, king, dictator, or any other idol.

I have to disagree with you here, but I can give you props on actually responding like an adult and can respect that we have different viewpoints.

No one owns being good, you arrogant prick. :rudy:

God owns being good. Without good people for you demonic beings to blend in with and stealthily spread your filthy demonic religions many of you will perish from the sheer horror, brutality and unethical nature of living in a truely demonic realm where anything goes. You dont want to be there. You need us, more than we need you.

Its so demonic, friend.

I don't get too deep into it on here, but if you knew so many people in the world believed in Santa Clause n flying reindeer, you would be baffled. You might even try to say something logical to help them but it only comes off as hate on your part because they actually argue back about how Santa Clause is real because it says so in his diary. You would even have a hard time taking anything they say serious even when talking about the weather. They could even say its raining outside and you would have to look yourself because you remember they believe a fat guy in a red suit climbs down chimneys once a year...

Being an atheist sucks sometimes, but there's really no room for a choice to make when acknowledging the earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around. I'd actually rather enjoy the steak in the matrix sometimes, but whatever...

bottom line, its really hard to ignore that adults who make the world go round or are simply in your daily life are reminding you almost daily that they're waiting on the tooth fairy to put the quarter under the pillow...

You're just demonstrably wrong. I'm not saying atheists are going through something as bad as jim crow, but you are just willfully ignorant if you don't think Christians try to implement policy that would negatively affect, and lead to discriminatory policies for non-Christians.

Do you have any examples?

Gay marriage, abortion, stem cell research and virtually any scientific advancement for a few of them. And then there's that most people would not want someone who believes in Superman to be in a position of power making decisions. From their point of view its a legit concern.

Abortion? How so
Gay marriage......:childplease:
Stem Cell research....Is it illegal? I don't think so.. You just want the goverment spend taxpayers money on it?

Well here's the problem. Why do you think people fight for gay rights because they think evolution proves the bible wrong? Who uses that premise to support the gays?

Not to mention, there are gay couples who uses donated sperm/eggs to have a child. At least half of the offspring's genetic material comes from the parents. It's really just a cluster fukk of an idea.

Because its hip basically

Who brought up the government? I'm naming issues that are affected by religious belief. And yeah I'd want the government to spend my money on medical breakthroughs.

To be fair, the peak of the religious right's influence was 2004, I think you're arguing against factors that don't exist on the same scale anymore. Factors that certainly do not have the same impact on electoral politics. But you're in Kentucky so it obviously affects you, but everyone doesn't live in the bible belt. If you're from the East Coast you know that presbyterians and people of that sort tend to vote blue, as do catholics, so from that perspective we're looking at you guys as if you're fighting battles that aren't that significant on a daily basis and I think that's where some of these guys are coming from. Religion isn't the problem, I grew up in a completely liberal church so everyone's experiences are different. Radically religious people are the problem. That's an issue you guys in appalachia and the south need to figure out, and that'll change soon too with people moving into Florida and Texas from the North.

But I guess a lot of you guys don't get to talk about this issues on a daily basis so I don't fault you. But as someone who is christian with a bunch of agnostic and some atheist friends (a large percentage of my friends might be agnostic now that I think about it), this all just seems like overkill. Our religious discussions are few and never get like this. I didn't realize it was that rare in our generation.

Again. Stem cell research is legal now. Second, it was a moral issue, not a religous one.

Bottom line is there are plenty of private investors investing money in the research as we speak...

Not true. It was a moral issue rooted in moral opposition based in religion. Political resistance against it was for clearly stated religious reasons. Opponents felt that the soul/life begins at conception, and thus it was immoral to destroy embryonic stem cells.
