Black Americans wouldn’t have progressed the way we did without the Black Church. We were way more organized. Had more respect for one another and weren’t easily influenced by entertainers and athletes when the church was more involved within our community. You even had non believers attending back in the day.

this speaks more to the fact that there was no alternative than it speaks to how powerful a force church is. back in the day, church was the only place cacs would let us congregate in private and in peace.​

I got turned off when I found out my pastor from back in the day was a scamming ass nikka. He built a house and bought like 3 whips off church donations. I legit thought he was a solid dude.

After that I went to the complete opposite end of the spectrum and realized how stupid religion is and the idea of god in general.

I'm a born again Christian. I recently left the church I grew up at after spending almost every Sunday there since 1999. I left because I'm too old to be in the youth group anymore (13-19) and my church has literally ZERO young adults besides myself. In addition to that, I love my pastor to death BUT I don't feel like his message really resonates with me. He tailors his sermon for the old people in the church. The congregation is 60% old people in their 60s & 70s, 30% people in their 30s & 40s, and 10% are the kids/grandkids of the aforementioned groups.

I then set out for my new church home. I've found several churches with LOTS of young people in the congregation, and I've found several black churches. Here's the problem I've kept running into:

-THE YOUNG CHURCHES ARE ALL WHITE/WHITE-PASSING LATINOS, AND I DON'T WANNA BE IN A ROOM FULL OF TRUMP VOTERS
-THE BLACK CHURCHES ARE ALL FULL OF OLD FARTS THAT CAN'T & WON'T RELATE TO ME

This is all extremely irritating to deal with. Can't no place give me that home feeling like a black church, but I need a place with a young adult small group that can empathize with my daily struggle as a young Christian prone to weakness in an unclean world.

My girl grew up Methodist and I grew up Baptist. We visited each other's churches (in our early 20's at this point) and decided that both congregations were too old for us. We visited a number of non-denominational churches with young pastor's and younger congregation's. First thing we realized was that the "modern" style of churchery was a little too....well.....modern for our tastes.

We like the swaying choir, with the sugary choir director and Big Mama that always nails the solo. The old cat that kills it on the organ but you know he's up in the Blues club on Friday night. The younger churches are too whitewashed and preppy. Everyone in the church is wearing nice jeans and polo shirts. I'm like "where are the loud suits and Stacy Adams shoes? And why aren't any of these ladies wearing church hats?" I made the mistake of wearing a suit to a new-age church. Felt like a narc that just got exposed during an undercover op. It was weird too because the pastor was this swole Kofi Siriboe looking breh but the ENTIRE congregation was young white people (mostly females). I didn't even know young single white women went to church like that .

We're definitely still spiritual, but haven't quite found what we're looking for. Probably easier once we get married and have kids.
