Modern American culture doesn't lend to what cultivates a 'good actor'.

  • Nuance is not valued in our culture, people prefer over the top behavior here
  • Patience with career results is also not valued
  • The paper/fame chase makes actors take roles that probably pay well/get them noteriety in the short-term but is a hinderance to their future
  • Our education system doesn't value 'the arts' in comparison
  • Our education system is overall less rigorous in comparison
All of this plus Americans value looks as a top priority.

My theory is England doesn't have an equivalent to the CW/ABC Family etc. That's not to say there aren't young shows like Misfits etc. but there isn't an economy of churning out young actors to feed a system like CW.

Instead of moving out to LA at 18 and auditioning for the remake of 90210, British actors study acting at college and university and do stage plays till they hit about 22/23, then try and get in the game.

Take John Boyega for example. I just Googled "John Boyega stage play" and it pops up that he's gonna be doing a run in British theatre this/next year.

Could you imagine Michael B. Jordan leaving Hollywood money behind for 6 months to a year to do a play?

I don't think British actors are better, but they train more, and for longer, before they get seen by the world. That's why by the time you first see Elba or Oyelowo etc. they're in their early 30s and not 21.

I half agree with you, English actors respect the art more

however not all of them start in late, example dude that plays spiderman is young, so is john.

and they also maybe better than American actors. American actors do seem a tad limited especially when it comes to doing accents.

what is it about American actors that they avoid theatre?

you're right every English actor I know has been to theatre and studied stage plays yet It doesn't seem the norm in Hollywood to do so.

And I feel you on the John and Spider-Man thing. It's not that I was saying there aren't young actors, but I feel like English actors don't see popping after 30 as failure.

But I can imagine being 30 in LA and not being in anything, then giving up and tryna be an agent or some shyt. But British actors probably see 30 as just hitting their stride rather than bein over the hill.

also culturally 30 is old in USA, and in England 30 is still young. so when an actor is 30 in England they don't feel like they're running out of time.

well something is gotta change or else they'll keep losing roles to brits and it won't slow down. there is no protectionism in sports and entertainment, if you're the best you get the job. english footballers found that out real quick in the late 90's and 2000s. best person gets the job.
