The following images, from an 1854 scroll after the treaty signed with the US, shows one of the Black crewmen, though it is unclear if he (they?) were from the United States:

The figure is shown as very black, his rib-cage showing, almost naked, and, for some reason, arms upraised and holding onto something, maybe cloth, a rag, or some other sign. Perry's expedition's Black crewmen looks like a slave, barefoot, almost naked, and probably abused, neglected, and exploited while on Perry's ship. Compare and contrast it with the following image of a Black man on the Perry expedition

This differs significantly, showing a man with pants and perhaps shoes, as well as hair. To the Japanese writer, the black man was amusing and aroused curiosity, as did the white Americans, according to this. The Japanese did not seem to make too many 'racial' judgments at this early stage in 1854 in their relationship with the Americas, but, clearly, over time, the black caricatures of American and European culture, Jim Crow in the US and nascent racial pseudoscience would ensure a decline in the perceptions of Africa and African-descendants in Japan.
1906+Japanese+depictions+of+African+soldiers.png

From 1906, the above illustrates African soldiers as all the worst caricatures of Blackness and Black people, as inky black, oversized lips, and ape-like. This same style of c00n, sambo, and minstrel blackface traditions on blackness can be traced back to American and European sources. By 1906, Japan was the only non-white imperial power on the move, and by then, relations with Europe and the US would have entrenched the above negative image of Africa and Blacks generally. Moreover, it associates them with animals, showing them using bayonets to hunt a lion, and some hut structure is visible, indicating African primitiveness.

they really can't stand it when we start putting the pieces to the puzzle together.
I'm starting to notice this more and more.

Arab views on African people

Despite this, some ethnic prejudices later developed among Arabs for at least two reasons: 1) their extensive conquests and slave trade;[53] and 2) the influence of Aristotle's idea that slaves are slaves by nature.[57][POV?discuss] A refinement of Aristotle's view was put forward by Muslim philosophers such as Al-Farabi and Avicenna, particularly in regards to Turkic and black peoples;[53] and the influence of ideas from the early mediaeval Geonic academies regarding divisions among mankind between the three sons of Noah, with the Babylonian Talmud stating that "the descendants of Ham are cursed by being black, and [it] depicts Ham as a sinful man and his progeny as degenerates."[58] However, ethnic prejudice among some elite Arabs was not limited to darker-skinned people, but was also directed towards fairer-skinned "ruddy people" (including Persians, Turks and Europeans), while Arabs referred to themselves as "swarthy people".[59] The concept of an Arab identity itself did not exist until modern times.[60] According to Arnold J. Toynbee: "The extinction of race consciousness as between Muslims is one of the outstanding achievements of Islam and in the contemporary world there is, as it happens, a crying need for the propagation of this Islamic virtue

Al-Jahiz also stated in his Kitab al-Bukhala ("Avarice and the Avaricious") that:
"We know that the Zanj (blacks) are the least intelligent and the least discerning of mankind, and the least capable of understanding the consequences of their actions."
Jahiz' criticism however, was limited to the Zanj and not blacks in totality, likely as a result of the Zanji revolts in his native Iraq.
This sentiment was echoed in the following passage from Kitab al-Bad' wah-tarikh (vol.4) by the medieval Arab writer Al-Muqaddasi:
As for the Zanj, they are people of black color, flat noses, kinky hair, and little understanding or intelligence.[65]
Al-Dimashqi (Ibn al-Nafis), the Arab polymath, also described the inhabitants of the Sudan (region) and the Zanj coast, among others, as being of "dim" intelligence and that:
...the moral characteristics found in their mentality are close to the instinctive characteristics found naturally in animals.
—Andrew Reid and Paul J. Lane, African Historical Archaeologies[66]

Their want to appear less common is what led them to the west.
Ummm no that clearly isn't the case, again "Wide Eyes" is a
genetic trait that appears throughout humanity, it appears NATURALLY in Japanese, koreans, chinese etc.
Now I won't deny the effects of white supremacy, I'm just saying it's not nearly as simplistic
as you're making it out to be.
Even the asian with wider eyes still have the eastern feature in their eyes not seen in western eyes.
Asians with wider eyes still have Asian features, who would've thunk that ? :pachaha:
And who do you think these Japanese people are aspiring to be ?
Young Japanese women want to be the models they see in their magazines.
Young Korean women want to be the Korean popstars that dominate their charts.
Young Chinese women want to look like their Chinese film and television stars.
Again, it's not as simple as you're making it out to be.

Why ? Because Western Media and influence is definitely there but they
largely produce their own media, it's not like America where Blacks are a minority
and are under represented in the media.
I think you're drawing these very specific comparisons from being a minority in a largely
white country (if you're a minority...of some sort...)

The same goes for male beauty Ideals in Japan, some women find femininity in Men to
be highly attractive (especially in facial features) THIS FOR EXAMPLE
IS NOT WESTERN IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM

manba%20futari.jpg

This right here is a distinct product of Japanese culture.
That Eastern feature isn't even seen in the anime cute characters like the one I posted earlier. It just looks full on western styled.
I'd argue that it looks "Western" to you, because you're a westerner yourself :ld:
I find this funny because in other mediums that can't support the Anime style very well
like CG for instance, their characters still come out looking distinctly Asian when that's the intent.
Unless of course they're going for a non Japanese look, then they'll make sure to "get down" the image
of a White or Black person.
To even mention the fact of anime coming from them liking western animation shows even more that its a western look that they have in the anime actually is from their interest in the west.
Western Animation was pretty much it back then, it doesn't mean they idolize "White people" :mindblown:
Anyone who understands Animation knows Disney was king back then, why ? Because they created
high quality master works, not because they were "white". :snoop: that you would even
come to that conclusion is :mindblown:

As I said before they often in engage in these extremes forms of differentiation
not because they all secretly worship white people but because they want to appear "different".
Whether that's through cosmetic surgery or through dressing outrageously.

sub-culture brehs

You're posting single individuals while out right ignoring sub-culture and
how it works in Japan.
You can't sidestep reality to support your argument.
And I'm pretty sure sociologists and cultural critics of Japan
who've actually spent time in Japan's fashion districts and media centers
have a better understanding than you or I do.
Where are these sociologists or journalists? Other than the ones we've already seen on Vice I mean?
I've posted links to normal foreigners in Japan.
Various websites that focus on social critiques of Japan.
And I've posted a link to a plastic surgeon who outlined
how commonly "wide eyes" appears in different countries/peoples
in Asia.

But I will post links for yah :

That's just a few but there are many, many websites on the subject.

"I was always envious and jealous of other girls who had double eyelids"

"why couldn't I be one of the lucky ones born with double eyelids"

*forced valley-girl accent* *overusage of the word actually* *cac mannerisms*

4M5SUNZ.png

Now I'm just playing devil's advocate but why is double eyelids translated to wanting to be white? I actually don't have a crease either like most Asian girls and wouldn't mind getting the surgery but it has nothing to do with trying to be white.

Are you saying the surgery itself is self-hate or the motivation behind it? :patrice:

the girl in the video says she hated her monolids since she was a little girl.

sounds like self-hate to me.

watch a few minutes to get an idea of how much she loathed her natural eyes.

and you're right, you are playing devils advocate, advocating for the devil.

Look at how asian eyes are to their outer rims and such in these same pics you post and you can see the difference of Japanese eyes compared to anime and western eyes.

When depicted in anime a lot of japanese characters don't have that eye outline and shape and the more cuter they get the less and less that feature remains.

The blue eyes and white hair isn't natural and combined together is pure European.

You can't argue that "it looks western to me because I'm western" when my race and its history and culture prevented me from identifying with The western world.
