Actually Spike is in my personal Top 10, he's definitely not in the Top 9, but its in the 20-10 Range, he's had his impact. He may not be better those but I think an argument could be made that Spike's impact on cinema can't be denied. He's also one of the most acclaimed Black Directors of all time. I think Spike is in the Debate even though I'd say yes he not better than those names.

With that said this post might be my fav. post I've seen in The Film Room

When it comes to Spike Lee people also tend to sleep on his skills when it comes to his documentaries (4 Little Girls, When the Levees broke, Kobe doing work, Bad 25) and the stage performances he's filmed (Kings of Comedy, A Huey P Newton Story).

He has a range that a lot of directors just don't have.

I see what you saying.

Giving that it's a Tarantino film, I already know what to except and given that's a time period movie dating back to the 1800s along with being a Spaghetti Western.

Tarantino is known for his excessive use of gore in his films and dialogue but it's a shame that white people reacted that way to the movie.

I bet the white people who did react that way to the movie were cacs who never paid attention in History class and have never bothered to read a book and or watch a documentary on that specific time in history.

Hell there are even some black folks that take that movie as historically accurate. I've come across a few people that try to use "Mandingo fights" in a debate about slavery and racism.

It is a good movie, with the biggest flaw being the lack of quality dialog for Django and a 3rd act that goes on for way too long. Also probably the most slapstick-y film Tarantino has ever made.

Two names that I'm shocked haven't gotten run are Ridley Scott and Ken Burns (technically a documentarist but Baseball and The Civil War are maybe two of the greatest documentaries ever)

Ridley Scott made The Counselor...that alone removes him from any GOAT tier list. :hhh:

People love to hate him, but even when he directs a bad movie James Cameron always entertains.

Which is weird because I remember when Cameron was considered the Gawd of directing right up there with Spielberg. I think the Cameron hate stems from the success he's had with Titanic and Avatar and his relatively low output. While you can argue that the scripts for those films are weak and rather formulaic, you can't front on Cameron's directing.

Ridley Scott been hit or miss since forever. It's just that whenever he does have a hit people want to act as if all that other shyt he did never happened. I remember people saying he should consider retiring after he made Prometheus aka the dumbest sci fi movie I've seen in years.
