The mid-gen refreshes were made because Sony and Microsoft learned that with the Generations going as long as they are now. Toward the end they will start losing the semi-enthusiast market to PC.

It's what happened to PS360 by the end of the gen.

They know this gen will be even longer so they tried to give enthusiasts another option to keep them locked in instead of running the risk of losing them to PC
Ya'll think I was joking around. :sas2:
Meach was robbed of 2017 POTY. :sas1:
Him rockin that POTY banner would have sent the Arcadium into a frenzy...now all we're left with is rehashing the same 2 or 3 points over and over again. :beli:

That's not what the post you responded to said though. :gucci:

Listen, I don't think consoles are going anywhere but some of you are acting like the current state of affairs is how things have always been....which clearly isn't the case.

There is dedicated gaming tablets so I don't get your point. The word tablet in and of itself doesn't mean anything.

It's closer to a tablet than a traditional console, and Nintendo themselves have said the foremost reason for the console's success is it's adaptability.

Even undocked you need to use the joycons or pro controller. Any way you slice it it is still a console/handheld

Yeah I fell back a little bit. I been busy with work and school...but being 100% honest, I just didn't have any interest for real in posting on here these passed few days/weeks. I haven't had much to say and didn't feel like arguing with people about the same 2 or 3 things. I mean, I've done that before because it was entertaining to kill the time at work, but recently I haven't been up for it. Things kind of slowed down this week so I checked back in to the arcadium. I picked up PUBG yesterday. It's a mess overall but more importantly, it's fun. I tried to hate on it last night as I played it but I found myself going one more round each time.

Consoles could never die out, anyone who believes that is foolish.

Though I can say that for me personally, I don't really feel excited when I think about my PS4 or X1 anymore. There's nothing that truly makes me want to play one over the other in regards to those 2. I'm still enjoying a lot of games, but the X1 and PS4 feel stale to me as consoles.

Exclusives are a huge talking point since features are damn near identical these days, but what I've been loving about the Switch is that it presents a unique way to enjoy everything it offers. I love throwing it on the dock and playing on the TV, I enjoy putting it on its kickstand and night and getting a few rounds of Mario kart 8 in or clearing a couple levels on Disgaea 5, and I fukkin' love the fact I can have these grand-scale games accessible with me on the go. It's why I initially bought into the PS Vita. The Joy Cons are super dope, and even tho Nintendo has had the concept out with the Wii nunchuks and shyt, it still feels a bit fresher than before. I love that I can slap my Joy-Cons into the little controller frame and have a traditional feeling controller or I can opt to have them just chillin all free. The experience the console itself gives me is dope, and I don't really feel that from the X1 and PS4. Not to say it's a bad thing, but I don't know if it makes me excited for the next xbox/ps generation. Think it's also why I've gravitated towards PC gaming, cause the keyboard and mouse feeling is fresh still to me.

IDK if there are others that feel that way but it's just something I've been realizing over the last few months.

That console gaming is dying narrative was based off the Xbox one selling poorly compared to the ps4 and the Wii u flopping.
Cats kept saying the PS4 sales was all front loaded which is bullshyt by now. We're 4 years ahead now c'mon. Sony I heard makes way more revenue thanks to PSN.

Sorry, pundits: Here’s why video game consoles aren’t dying but actually thriving
1.) That's odd, because we all talked about this during the 360 era, I guess you stuck on fanboy :manny:

2.ps4 was never loaded. This gen started slow and still is. When you name games you go "Driveclub, Nier, nioh, the last of us remastered or you'll refer to part2 which isn't out. You do this on literally every list. You can sub Driveclub for the occasional Bloodborne shout out yet receipts show that you hated Bloodborne (I made fun of you for not liking it in the Bloodborne thread) this is not a memorable gen at all for exclusives unless you're Nintendo. But hey, God of war pt15 will be dropping soon. A series that fell off last gen...
Calling it now, these traditional consoles will start winding down by late 2016

Yet another stunningly accurate @LÍQUIDO prediction. 'Tradtional consoles' winding down by end of 2016. :russ:
I am the one who was saying that since Sohh  and while I hear you talking I have to wonder if you still have a ps3? If not, what do you use as a bluray player. Sony since 2013 has been "winding down" with no media support(cd/bluray/external hdd) no movies on the hdd. Microsoft just announcing the cloud will power Gamepass from other devices. You not paying attention :francis:
:popcorn3:

The advent of the PS4 Pro and XB1X changed that. Imo, the PS4 Pro was a mid gen refresh that blurs the line between gens but I think PS5 will be BC and thus PS4 will still get software for a few more years while PS5 will probably be a PS4 Pro+ type console where it can play every PS4 title and major titles will get PS5 patches? Idk.
Once again Sony gamers are begging for Xbox features :laff: bruh, didn't the Sony defense force come together at Mar a lago to proclaim WHO CARES ABOUT BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY yet 100% of you talk like if Sony has EVER hinted at such a thing (They haven't, contradicts gaikai)
I mean....it kinda has as the Switch is currently the best selling console in U.S. history and half of the console's gimmick is it's a "tablet".

Regardless, it's not a traditional console life cycle. Prior to this gen it was unheard of to release a 1.5 version of your current gen console.

I seriously doubt console gaming is going anywhere any time soon but the success of the Switch coupled with both Sony and MS releasing mid-gen replacements....it's starting to seem like the industry isn't sure how to proceed.

Fred.
Every upgrade in console history was more significant than the PS4pro upgrade. The FX chip made FX racer possible (nobody remembers playing it, probably an alternate universe)
The Sega CD :wow: 32x brought arcade graphics to the home  the reason we have mid-gen upgrades is because the plan was to keep this gen around for 10yrs. The Xbox one was designed to be on 24-7-365, they had crucial plans with a connected device, a connected universe. No way in Hell this was a 5yr plan like people like to repeat :snoop:

Then with the rhetoric of diminishing returns, why wouldn't they think this gen would last longer. Trump became president, the iPhone is over $1,000 and they upgraded twice in one year. They testing the stupid of the consumer :francis:

:patrice: yes and no

The concept of gaming has been hijacked by nerds. Nerds didn't play pacman or even super Mario bros. They did once they got aNintendo but the real nerds would play games that appeal to them. And with no internet, a computer was just a nerds luxury. More powerful they had a bunch of cool looking stuff but when you played it You knew it was a nerd interpretation of a game.

Over the years, evolution had skinny jeans and nerds fused, and that's how It'syoung was born.

Nobody ever called a Nintendo a computer, not even now. But we try to view the Xbox and ps4 as gaming PC's. The Xbox one X being more powerful than most gaming PC's has who upset when you say that? NERDS :francis:

They will eventually stop calling consoles consoles because nerds want to be respected, all gaming will be cloud based and the nerds will push the narrative that the cloud is a PC so you're a nerdy PC gamer like people who play Dota.

They've already convinced themselves that since consoles have "tech" in it that technically it's a computer :mjlol: like if the NES had non computer parts in it?

both consoles needed a significant mid-gen update, which isn't really part of the "traditional console" cycle

They didn't 'need' anything. Both the pro and x are niche consoles, they aren't driving sales.

You are moving the goalposts breh. The thread is about people saying consoles were going to die, not about 1.5 systems making it a less traditional console cycle.

you can basically say that the Switch is a portable device that you can also plug into your TV

The Switch is a combination of two traditional ways to game (handheld and home). It's very clever but there is no reason to think it will revolutionise gaming consoles and signal the end of home consoles.

How am I moving the goal post when I just said consoles aren't going anywhere? :dahell:

Liquid was wrong but this thread is full of people on the opposite end of the spectrum acting like this gen is business as usual. After the mid-gen replacements (which has never happened before) and the success of the Switch (which most of this board swore would flop, since we're keeping track of wrong assumptions) it should be blatantly obvious things aren't going to be the same going forward.

I guess this is the part where people say "but not the same =/= consoles are dead!"....which is a moot point, as I'm not arguing that. I'm arguing Liquid claiming console gaming is dead, and people ignoring how vastly different this gen is than previous gens, are both equally fallacious.

if you hook up a wireless controller to a tablet is it a console?

Thank you. The shyt is a home console/tablet hybrid, if we're being specific. As wrong as Liquid was, he point blank said Nintendo would come up with some crazy hybrid....and they did.
