Way to add zero information. I gave you 15 links showing specific key moments and long-term trends that proved Bron was an elite defender for most of his career. You couldn't counter that with anything.
When I asked for ONE example of Kobe shutting down another player in a series, you couldn't give it.
And yet you put Kobe as a great defender when he wasn't consistently good on that end past 2000 or 2001?
2004: “Kobe’s defense, to be accurate, has faltered in recent years, despite his presence on the league’s all-defensive team. The voters have been seduced by his remarkable athleticism and spectacular steals, but he hasn’t played sound, fundamental defense. Mesmerized by the ball, he’s gambled too frequently, putting us out of position, forcing rotations that leave a man wide open, and doesn’t keep his feet on the ground.”
2008: “We’re trying to work with Kobe in staying inside the team framework of how we play defense."
2013: "No question, Michael was a tougher, more intimidating defender. He could break through virtually any screen and shut down almost any player with his intense, laser-focused style of defense....In general, Kobe tends to rely more heavily on his flexibility and craftiness, but he takes a lot of gambles on defense and sometimes pays the price."
This is the sort of shyt Phil talking about:
Kobe's defense was inconsistent as fukk, which is why he never shut down any significant player in a critical game/series and why he never posted the elite iso/man stats that Bron did. He was an elite defender when he wanted to be but he picked his spots poorly and couldn't be trusted to guard the other team's best player. Look at what Iverson, Ginobli, Hamilton, Nash, Allen, Terry, Westbrook did to the Lakers in big series...where was Kobe's GOAT defensive effort shutting down the players that mattered?
Once Shaq left Kobe wasn't even trying to be his team's defensive stopper anymore, and until the Lakers got Ron Artest to come in and do his job they Lakers lost consistently as a result.
