I swear it seems like ppl don't know hoops

Kobe played in the era of iso ball...look at his contemporaries, AI, Mac, Hibachi, etc...

If we're talking about pure skill, Kobe has the fewest flaws bc he was the most skilled player in NBA history

Even though he took contested shots, still one of the greatest scorers the game has ever seen, which was a testament to his greatness

When you add in clutchness, mid-range assassin, post up game, handle, defense, IQ, etc....he's clearly near the top of the list, if not at the very top

The list is him & MJ
Kobe has pure skill just like Kyrie but still has more flaws in his game than MJ.

In a 17 yr career, he was committed to def for 5 seasons

Which five were those?

2021: LeBron James continues to make All-Defense case

2020: LeBron James shuts down Jamaal Murray in "winning time"

2020: The way LeBron James plays defense ‘lights a fire’ under the Lakers

2020: LeBron James asked to guard Giannis Antetokounmpo, and delivered

2020: Insane Stat Shows How Badly LeBron James Shut Down Kawhi Leonard and Paul George

2018: 'Playoff LeBron' is real, and defense is the reason

2016: LeBron James is demoralizing Steph Curry these NBA Finals

2016: The Turning Points Of LeBron James’ Path To Elite Defense

2014: LeBron James named to All-Defensive team for sixth straight season

2013: Why LeBron is DPOY

2012: LeBron James defense on Pau Gasol

2011: LeBron James' Defense On MVP Derrick Rose Amazing In Miami Heat Series Win Over Chicago Bulls

2011: LeBron James: Forget Offense, He May Be the Best Defensive Stopper in the NBA

2010: LeBron's lockdown: Paul Pierce's career versus James

2009: LeBron finishes 2nd in Defensive Player of the Year voting

I've seen Bron get cooked too many times to be one of the best wing defenders of all time

:mjlol:

Bron will only defend stars and superstars in short spurts

Off the top of my head, wing defenders I'll take over Bron:

Pippen
Michael Cooper
Bobby Jones
Kobe
MJ
Bruce Bowen
Tony Allen
Kawhi
Iggy
Artest
Dumars
Glove
Draymond

there are others too, but you gotta take off the stan goggles...guys played def their whole careers...not just a 5 yr stretch
Who did Kobe ever shut down for a full playoff game or series? After 2001 he only played defense in short spurts too, Phil even called him out on it and they didn't win again after 2002 until Lakers put Ariza and Artest in there to actually take the wing defense assignments.

Anyone trying to put Bobby Jones and Glove in the same category of defender is just fukking around. There ain't a single player that the two of them both would have guarded.

And Dumars wasn't remotely as good a defender on wings as Bron, that's just disrespectful. Dumars played on a well-coached team surrounded by defenders as good or better than himself, within that role he was good but on an island he wasn't on Bron's level.

In terms of on-ball defense, Pippen, Coop, MJ, Bowen, Tony Allen, Kawhi, Iggy, Artest, and Draymond are all fair selections. But of those only Pippen, MJ, and Draymond played off-ball free safety defense as good as Bron and only Draymond protected the rim as good as Bron. What made Bron elite is that he had elite on-ball defense 1-4 AND could defend the rim at an elite level AND was one of the best free safeties ever.

You don't know hoops...and you are not objective

In your mind, Bron was a better on ball defender than Kobe

Bron's on ball defense was not superior for most of his career...he is a better off ball defender than on ball defender

For top 10 all time level talents, MJ, Kobe, Duncan, and Dream were all better defenders than Bron

Media d*ckeats Bron to no end, yet he still hasn't made 8+ all defensive selections...bc he wasn't committed for most of his career

Everyone has great moments defensively, but it's consistency that sets the great ones apart

Shot efficiency
Not trusting teammates / plays
Too much hero ball at times
Btw Kobe is that dude so don’t :hubie:

Please don't mention shot efficiency when 45% is the standard for perimeter players

Not trusting teammates but has multiple game changing assists during the finals in crunch time (Horry, Fisher, Artest just to name a few)

Too much hero ball, when that was the norm in that era

Way to add zero information. I gave you 15 links showing specific key moments and long-term trends that proved Bron was an elite defender for most of his career. You couldn't counter that with anything.

When I asked for ONE example of Kobe shutting down another player in a series, you couldn't give it.

Everyone has great moments defensively, but it's consistency that sets the great ones apart

And yet you put Kobe as a great defender when he wasn't consistently good on that end past 2000 or 2001? :why:

2004: “Kobe’s defense, to be accurate, has faltered in recent years, despite his presence on the league’s all-defensive team. The voters have been seduced by his remarkable athleticism and spectacular steals, but he hasn’t played sound, fundamental defense. Mesmerized by the ball, he’s gambled too frequently, putting us out of position, forcing rotations that leave a man wide open, and doesn’t keep his feet on the ground.”

2008: “We’re trying to work with Kobe in staying inside the team framework of how we play defense."

2013: "No question, Michael was a tougher, more intimidating defender. He could break through virtually any screen and shut down almost any player with his intense, laser-focused style of defense....In general, Kobe tends to rely more heavily on his flexibility and craftiness, but he takes a lot of gambles on defense and sometimes pays the price."

This is the sort of shyt Phil talking about:

Kobe's defense was inconsistent as fukk, which is why he never shut down any significant player in a critical game/series and why he never posted the elite iso/man stats that Bron did. He was an elite defender when he wanted to be but he picked his spots poorly and couldn't be trusted to guard the other team's best player. Look at what Iverson, Ginobli, Hamilton, Nash, Allen, Terry, Westbrook did to the Lakers in big series...where was Kobe's GOAT defensive effort shutting down the players that mattered?

Once Shaq left Kobe wasn't even trying to be his team's defensive stopper anymore, and until the Lakers got Ron Artest to come in and do his job they Lakers lost consistently as a result.
Incredibly, Kobe Bryant remained unscathed. For a good majority of that series, the 7 time All-NBA First Team Defender didn't guard Paul Pierce; the Celtic's premiere wing scorer who went on to win NBA Finals MVP. Bryant didn't defend Ray Allen; the elite SG who went on to post 20.3 ppg in the Finals. Instead, Kobe Bryant defended sophomore PG Rajon Rondo for the entire NBA Finals.

Kobe Bryant has a sterling reputation as a standout defender. He is a staple on the All-NBA First Team Defense (7 appearances, plus 2 other All-NBA Second Team Defense appearances). He'll likely make it again this year. And it is simply egregious. I agree that Bryant used to be an elite defender. I know he's capable of being the best defender in the NBA. And I understand that he can't guard the opponent's best player all the time. But it is simply inexcusable at the end of games, particularly playoff games. Watch these 2010 playoffs. Kobe Bryant will not concern himself with defending his All-Star counterparts.

No city has a love affair with a player like Los Angeles and Kobe Bryant. 14 years of continuous service, 4 NBA Championships, 2 other NBA Finals appearances. 2 NBA Scoring Titles. 12 NBA All-Star appearances. 1 NBA Dunk Contest Title. The guy has brought excitement, success and an incredible body of work to Los Angeles. Six years ago he feuded with arguably the best center in NBA history, ultimately leading to him being traded; and the majority of fans still remained loyal to Bryant. In there eyes, Bryant can do no wrong. And so consequently, the fans don't even notice Kobe's incessant coasting on the defensive end.

This column isn't to bash something that happened nearly two full years ago. This is to shed some light on the fact that, in my opinion, Kobe Bryant has been taking it easy on defense since Shaquille O'Neal was dealt in 2004. Whether it was Kobe requesting to play off the ball to conserve energy for offense, or whether it was Phil Jackson's decision, I'm perplexed at why. I have a very difficult time believing this was Phil Jackson's choice. While playing under Phil Jackson in Chicago, Michael Jordan didn't play the roaming defender role that Kobe does. Anything but. Jordan was renowned as one of the premiere defenders in the entire league. His 1988 Defensive Player of the Year trophy attests to that.

Over the course of the regular season, the Lakers have directed Ron Artest, all 260 lbs. plus of him, to defend much quicker & faster players in order to accommodate Kobe Bryant's request to take it easy on defense. That would be like asking Darius Songaila to stop these All-Star caliber swingmen. Artest has drawn impossible assignments including Dwyane Wade, Joe Johnson, Manu Ginobili, Brandon Roy, Tyreke Evans, Monta Ellis, LeBron James & Kevin Durant. Most of those players play the same position as Kobe. On paper, that workload should fall squarely on Bryant.

KD has weaknesses people just disregard them because he’s a “hooper” and is an aesthetic scorer.

High dribble, loose handle, slender frame, mediocre passer not bad out doubles and reactive situations but not instinctual too many blind spots and weak limp-wrist passes and overambitious fast balls that lead to TO’s as well as late reads, not a great game manager or on-floor leader, gets jump shot happy at times instead of applying slashing rim pressure with his length. All these things are reasons why in the past he’s struggled against traps and double teams in the playoffs. He has a 4:3 career assists to turnover ratio which is mediocre for a high usage wing player. TO’s was an issue for him this season was averaging over 4 per 36 minutes for a good chunk of the season. Nets adding Harden put KD off-ball more and limited his TO’s a bit.

For many years in his career he was also a mediocre defender he has transformed himself into a very good individual perimeter defender and a solid shot blocker still has tendencies to get screened or backdoored ball watching not a strong team defender and that limits his defensive impact.

KD has weaknesses yeah he’s a beast and a lab creation but yes dude has flaws.

For least weaknesses you have to go with MJ that’s why he’s the G.O.A.T., his only weaknesses are three point shooting (elite jump shooter otherwise), not trusting teammates (good playmaker despite it, drew too much attention to not open things up), and on defense he struggled in the post and reached in a lot and then later on quick guards could get the best of him but dude was a defensive playmaker his gambles often paid off.
