Do psychology if you like it, if you looking for a hustle pick the major that brings the most money. Either way you won't starve. Its pretty much well known you'll make about $30 - 35k/year with only a bachelor's.

Unemployment for those with a master's or doctorate is less than 1%, for those with only a bachelor's it is much higher. A lot of people with a master's make at least $60k a year and usually work in group practice seeing their own patients.

Everyone on here is guessing, I'm giving you facts. I know a few people in the field, psychologist with a Ph.D. are charging $250 for a 1 hour session.

So what's a good gameplan so that I'm not broke until my 30's of I want to purse this

I personally think Economics has the greatest crossover appeal amongst degrees. It appeals to both the financial world and the social science one.

As for getting a PhD in psychology...I wouldn't bank on it. Not to discourage you, but I'm just being real about it. I use to work as an admissions officer for a top school with a Psych PhD program and the competition is ruthless. The acceptance rate is like 5% from highly qualified people...the comp at lesser schools is almost as bad.

When it comes to a legit PhD program, it takes quite a bit of luck.

You can either go for the fortune or the love. Seems like you at cross roads, pick one and go from there. You are not gonna starve with a degree in psychology.

But IT guys are making $100k/year, and engineers start with $75k/year straight of school with only a bachelor's.

You gonna make about half, so its between $30 - 40k/year, and you have a tough job market with only a bachelor's.

That pretty much sums it up. But things change dramatically with an advanced degree.

This, psychology is a great field but you are gonna struggle without those masters and PHD's. Social Psychology is the hot one right now because of the social media boom, people are communicating faster than ever and people need to examine it.

Nothing dealing with psychology is gonna have you out bank Mechanical Engineers or Information Technology graduates. BUT, if you love it it won't be work and you can produce in a way that others who are just doing it can't.

He'll i'm a journalism major...ain't NO jobs. Its too competitive, but i love it AND there's a gang of jobs i can get with it. It encompasses more than just writing for a newspaper.

So i say find something you love that you can be flexible with.

This is kind of an exaggeration.

Most engineers I know start at 45k-65k depending on what type of engineering they do. As far as IT, there's no way your average IT major with no experience is making $100k out of school. I'd say computer science majors tend to make a little less than engineers, and IT majors tend to make a little less than that depending on their experience.

There's no major where people average $100k out of school. But that said if you major in something like engineering or comp sci you're much less likely to be unemployed after graduation.

I never said IT guys are making $100k straight out of school

Engineers are not making less than $70k in Florida.

According to this article

Engineering jobs pay the most -- with this year's graduates starting at a median salary of $58,581, which is relatively unchanged from last year.

But, then again, I don't know what the cost of living is like down there, if it's more expensive than average I guess jobs would tend to pay more. :ld:

I wish I had did this when I was young. But now i'm 35...

people think they can skimp around it but at the end of the day

its probably the safest bet for a rising professional

So I'm 25 and been in school since January just getting my basic stuff done.

I haven't been 100% on what I actually want to do for the rest of my life and time isn't slowing down so I really need to get on track and figure it out.

I WAS thinking about getting a degree in business, not because I have a passion for it or anything, but because it seems more applicable in the real world

Now

Im considering a degree in psychology, it's something that always has been a HUGE interest to me BUT I'm already 25 and feel like it might be too late to get involved in all that.. Plus my girl who is planning on going to med school said there really aren't a lot of careers out there for that major, yet it's something I could see myself being passionate about

Stay away from psychology. The guy who said economics is right on the money (no pun intended).

I got to Trigonometry and stopped.

Funny thing is most people think I'm great at math since I'm a financial analyst. But that's just a title, my job is actually 75% accountant, 15% financial analyzing, 10% contract specialist. The math involved is basic.

This is no disrespect to IT guys, but IT is a totally different beast than Computer Engineering. Even Computer Science and Computer Engineering are almost entirely different except a few shared classes.

There are plenty of people who can code that can't do Algorithm Analysis and efficiency corrections. Those things include Big O analysis, which is basically all math.

No I agree... which is why I say he should look into coding. If he learned IOS6, he could market an app an make money on the said right now in addition to his job as a developer.

He could also become and IT project manager....
