It's a matter of styles.
I think Messi's the greatest.

But there are people 15 years ago who felt similarly about Ronaldo (the other Ronaldo)
O Fenomeno :banderas:

Even if you ignore his world cup shortcomings against a great Germany team, there's absolutely no excuse for Messi to not have at least one copa america, other than the fact that he flat out choked a penalty and failed to score a single goal in 2 finals vs Chile.

On paper, Argentina is by far the most stacked team in the Americas too :francis:

This. You can't be a goat without enjoying success in internationals as well as club football.

Inb4 stans 'but but but Champions League is the hardest tournament there is' :mjlol: No it fukking isn't, you play goat herds from Greece and former Soviet/East German mining outposts until the quarter finals, sometimes semi finals. It's a shyt competition and the standard is much higher at the World Cup.

NEW ERA
Waht a bunch of bullshyt. Messi is a great player but best ever ? Lmaaaooo.

You neggas kill me everytime. We can sit here and say the same shyt about plenty of players.

Tell me one player who has played with 2 players that finished top 3 and top 5 in the race for Ballon d or ? I'll wait. :sas2:

There was a time in 2012, the last 3 finalist for player of the year was Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. All played with Messi. All played right behind Messi and was feeding him assist. Spain dominated international football all throughout Messi's peak. Coincidentally, Spain squad was more than half Barca players :mjlol:

Seriously, stop exposing y all selves.
I have a text message from you where you say Messi is the GOAT. This text message came in to me 4/23 during the El Clasico, so it's recent. Now your clown ass wanna hop on here and in character try and shyt on Messi? Which is it you confused ass nikka? Is it Oochie Wally Wally or is it One Mic? Lemme know if you want that exposal :steviej:

The reason why most people have him as the GOAT is because no one consistently dominates games like him

For comparison, Ronaldo on more occasions than Messi, may score but doesn't really dominate the rest of the game

The Phenomenon and Dinho are the most talented though

:rudy:

He was useless and they won it after he got subbed off. He didn't lead shyt. One of the worst players of the team throughout the tournament.
:umad:he was the captain - he lifted the cup at the end of the tournament.

:whoo:clearly you didn't watch the final of the euros when CR7 from the touchline was coaching his team to victory.
:blessed:leader on and off the field!!

Messi isn't GOAT. :mjlol:

So we forgot how Juventus pocket him last month in two legs. :mjpls:

He just plays in a generation when the creativity is lacking and teams stack up great players.

He is...
  • A better #10 than the likes of Michael Laudrup, Zico, Baggio, Platini, etc.
  • A more clinical finisher than the likes of Henry, Romario, Inzaghi, R9 (debatable), CR7 (debatable), etc.
  • More effective dribbler than the likes of Robben, Maradona, Ronaldinho, Cruyff, etc.
  • Better at controlling the tempo of the game than the likes of Xavi, Pirlo, Iniesta, Redondo, etc.
  • A set-piece specialist on par with the likes of Juninho, Riquelme, Beckham, etc.
It's hilarious seeing people cite Xavi and Iniesta for Messi's successes when Xavi only rose to prominence around 2008. He had debuted in the Barcelona side 10 years prior and he was NEVER considered among the elite midfielders until 2008 came around. In fact, in the only UCL Final he ever made it to without Messi in 2006, he found himself rotting away on the bench as an unused substitute in favor of Deco. He perfectly embodies what a "system player" is, because without the changes Pep implemented to Barcelona's playing style during his reign, he wouldn't nearly be as revered as he is today.

Iniesta is also similar in this regard, given how his shortcoming in the Spanish NT mysteriously coincided with the decline of Xavi (failure to progress out of the group stages in the 2014 World Cup and losing to Italy in 1/16 of the 2016 Euros), whilst Messi almost ended up victorious in the 2014 World Cup Finals with a squad that was rippled with injuries and far inferior to the Spanish teams that Iniesta found success with. He's arguably been Barcelona's weakest starting midfielder this season and will probably get replaced during this summers transfer window.

Taking Messi out of the Barcelona team during the Pep Guardiola era (and even now) would yield similar to results to what happened to the Bulls when Jordan retired after their initial three-peat. The Bulls were good enough to win 55 games and earn the #3 seed, but lost in the 2nd round. While Barca may have been able to win a league title by luck if they had no Messi, they definitely wouldn't have won two 2 UCLs.

Also, the Champions League is the prime standard as far as footballing competition goes. The teams competing for the UCL annually (Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, PSG, etc) are assembled like NBA All Star teams, but with greater chemistry, coaching and preparedness.

You have the best players in the world of ALL nationalities playing 38 league games with each other, 13 games if they make it to the Finals of the UCL, in addition to countless other games in their domestic cup ties and pre-season games. The chemistry that is built up makes it a lot harder for the elite teams to defeat one another, than is the case for the WC and Euros where you met up every four years--and a lot can happen in 4 footballing years. This is why the Spanish NT of recent years was so successful because they were mainly comprised of Barca + Real players who were familiar with one another.

Winning national tournaments is more lucked based, rather than reflective of the actual talent on the playing field like the UCL. You can get lucky draws like Portugal did in the Euro 16s and end up winning, or you can play well against tough opponents like Argentina did in the 2014 World Cup (beating Belgium and Netherlands) only to end up with key players like Angel Di Maria and Aguero getting injured when you finally reach the finals.

And if players like Messi get players get penalized for not winning a national trophy, then players like Buffon (arguably the GOAT goalkeeper) and Ronaldo (arguably the GOAT striker) need to have asterisks placed by their names for failing to ever win the Champions League despite winning national trophies.
