The international trophy came about because other great players like Maradona and Pele won the WC. Prior to the mid to late 90s European teams never used to be stacked, the big teams like Milan,Real,Barca,Bayern won stuff but there were lots of restrictions with regards to fielding non-European players. The limit was 3 i believe and Barcelona/AC Milan even left some players out during the 94 Champions league. Naturally most people saw the world cup and continental tournaments as the holy grail. The champions league only admitted the champions not the 2nd,3rd and 4th placed teams. The quality of earlier international tournaments was very good as well, Euro 2000 is still better than any I have seen since.

When it comes to Messi, he is seen as more aesthetically more pleasing than Ronaldo. Ronaldo used to be a winger but now is really more of a forward. Messi is a playmaker+finisher and the fact that he scores at the rate he does while he performs the creative role is what makes people like him. He can genuinely have games where he doesn't score but is easily the best player on the pitch. He excels at 2 different roles and he is a better 10 than Silva,KDB,Ozil etc while he scores at a similar rate to Ronaldo. The Xavi/Iniesta talking point has not been true since 2013 at least. Barcelona had to get him off the bench against PSG in 2013 when he played injured because they had no spark whatsoever. Prior to Neymar and Suarez Barca without Messi was like the Spanish NT of 2010 that just kept possession and waited for Villa to provide the goals or break in passing.

Winning a world cup is a TEAM ACHIEVEMENT. There are several reasons why Argentina has underachieved on the world stage. Early in Messi's career(2010 South Africa), the team balance was completely off; they had arguably the best attack in the world and almost every match was a goal fest, but a terrible backline and keeper which caught up with them. The young core that would become the World Cup winning German team (in Brazil) destroyed that shytty Argentine defense. In Brazil(and throughout his whole career) Gonzalo Higuaín is a no show or he fukks up royally on the big stage; World Cup, Copa America, or his club teams... it really doesn't matter. Carlos Tevez may have been a cancer to the team, but he produces in big games, club and country.

Back to Messi.... There are only a few.... EVER that have the combination of great technical ability and supremely high football player IQ.....


Pele.... Brazilian... Like I said, Brazilians will never admit it. Neymar is about the only Brazilian that will praise Messi publically. Pele even said that Neymar was better than Messi. That says it all.

Ronaldo de Lima... Also Brazilian. His goal scoring abilities were incredible. I understand why people call him the greatest goal scorer ever.

Maradona.... He kinda acts like Jordan towards Kobe.... know that Messi is more gifted than him, but won't concede the fact because he hasn't brought home a WC trophy(or more titles).

Zidane..... Has been on record for praising Messi and realizes Messi's greatness ... and now is a victim of his greatness. Zidane EMBARRASED the last great Yellow Canary team(Brazil). That is high football IQ on display.


To compare CR7 to Messi is laughable, especially to club, because CR7 disappears when EL CLASICO rolls around. CR plays small, ESPECIALLY AT THE BERNABEU(or now,The BernaLEO). The proof is in the statistics, the match results and the club trophies won in the Messi era. Messi and Barcelona have dominated C. Ronaldo & Real Madrid. All facts, no fiction. As far as country, Messi and CR had similar shytty national team mates until CR team mates actually pulled the head out of their ass and performed at the EURO 2016(AND THEY HAD A CRIMINALLY EASY DRAW!!!!!), so this is why idiots say that CR is better.
