VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida — Two men have been arrested after police discovered a series of text messages in which the two men discussed plans to groom and rape a 3-year-old girl in Florida.

Lafe Best, 37, was arrested Tuesday and is in the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond. He is charged with conspiracy to commit sexual battery on a child. He was arrested in connection to a different case involving his friend and sexual partner, Benjamin Worster, 39, according to a Facebook post from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Worster was arrested in January on charges of lewd or lascivious molestation, lewd or lascivious conduct and 21 counts of possession of child pornography.

Police began investigating Worster after discovering a series of text messages on Worster’s phone which he had exchanged with Best. The messages detailed their plan to groom and rape a 3-year-old girl.

The messages were first discovered by the girl’s mother, according to police. The 3-year-old and her mother moved into Worster’s apartment in December. Police said on Facebook that soon after, the 3-year-old told her mother Worster had touched her.

On December 17, Worster was taken to the hospital after an apparent overdose, police said. The 3-year-old’s mother found Worster’s phone lying on his bed and discovered the text messages.

Police included a portion of the text messages in their Facebook post to demonstrate “how predators work to groom young children for sexual abuse.”

Detectives executed a search warrant at Best’s residence Tuesday and discovered what appeared to be child pornography on his cell phone, in addition to the graphic texts exchanged with Worster. Police said they expect Best will face additional charges.

Best was living in a home with two people who have a 20-month-old child. Police do not believe the 20-month-old was a victim of any abuse at this time.

New hate crime charges filed in Brickell MLK confrontation

MIAMI (AP/WSVN) — An armed white man who got into a traffic confrontation with a group of black teenagers protesting housing inequality on Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been charged with hate crimes, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Mark Bartlett, 51, is charged with three counts of aggravated assault with prejudice and two firearms counts, Miami-Dade County State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a news release.

The charges are brought under a state law allowing enhanced hate-crime penalties when a crime is motivated by prejudice.

The state attorney’s office said if Bartlett is found guilty on all charges, he faces up to 55 years in prison.

“Actions matter. Words matter, and the crime matters,” Fernandez Rundle said. “That underlying crime, plus those words, that prejudice, is evidenced, then that’s when the enhancement kicks in. There were racial epithets that were used in the video, so I think you all saw it, or witnesses told us about it.”

Cellphone video taken by bystanders shows Bartlett carrying a handgun and yelling racial slurs at the teenagers on bicycles blocking traffic in downtown Miami. Bartlett’s girlfriend was also involved — at one point calling the group “thugs” — but was not charged with any crime.

Jamel Anderson, 16, was one of the victims of the Brickell Martin Luther King Jr. Day incident.

“He was trying to make feel like we nobody. He was trying to make us feel like nothing,” Anderson said. “We ride bicycles and everything to stop all the gun violence and everything. We was out there to protest it and our fair housing in our community.”

The protest involved potential loss of affordable housing in the impoverished Liberty City neighborhood. It coincided with a much larger event, “Wheels Up, Guns Down,” that was timed to coincide with Martin Luther King Jr. Day and involved mostly young African-American men riding motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles at high speeds in traffic, popping wheelies and riding while standing on the seats.

Dwight Wells, the founder of the “Bikes Up Guns Down,” Boys and Girls Miami, said, “Racism against African-American kids, Spanish kids, kids from all different in all different ethnic backgrounds is not tolerated in Miami or in the United States of America.”

The state attorney’s office said the entire incident took place along three different parts of Brickell Avenue.

“Part of the complication of this was trying to put those three together,” Fernandez Rundle said.

Bartlett’s lawyers said in an email that they are disappointed in the new charges and contended they were brought partly because of political pressure.

“Clearly this mob of people who were commandeering traffic, and taunting passengers, while wearing masks and gloves, were not peacefully protesting,” attorneys Jayne Weintraub and Jonathan Etra said in the statement. “They were committing multiple crimes for which the state attorney is not holding them accountable.”

Bartlett also told police he never pointed his gun at any of the protesters, according to an arrest report.

An arraignment hearing is set Wednesday for Bartlett. His lawyers’ statement said he would be found innocent. He had initially only been charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

“I’m sure the defense attorneys will do their best to find criticisms and cracks in the case, but right now, we believe we’re doing the right thing,” Fernandez Rundle said.

Attorneys for some of the teenagers have also filed a civil rights lawsuit against Bartlett and his girlfriend, Dana Scalione, accusing them of hate crimes, assault, battery and infliction of emotional distress. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Those lawyers, Lee Merritt and Marwan Porter, have also been pushing for hate-crime charges to be filed.

“In this day and time when you have kids being killed at schools, churches, movie theaters, we cannot take this kind of conduct lightly. It can end tragically,” Porter said.

Florida governor asks president to place Space Force headquarters in Cape Canaveral

Johari Canty

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (WSVN) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has asked the president to put the headquarters for his proposed Space Force in Cape Canaveral.

DeSantis announced his proposal on Twitter, Tuesday afternoon.

Today, I am formally sending a request to @realDonaldTrump to place the headquarters for the Space Force Combatant Command here in Florida @NASAKennedy in Cape Canaveral. This is part of Florida's history and is a logical fit for our state.

The proposed military group would start off as part of the Air Force but could potentially become its own separate department in the future, according to senior administration officials.

President Donald Trump said the branch is needed to ensure the United States’ dominance in space. However, some lawmakers have voiced concern about the need and potential cost of the branch.

Cost details are expected to be included in the 2020 budget proposal Trump is sending to Congress next month.

Police: Homeless man said God told him to rescue rattlesnake
Courtesy: Jacksonville Beach Police
Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A rattlesnake in Florida ended up in the back of a police car.

The snake was being carried by a homeless man walking around Jacksonville Beach on Monday morning. According to Fox 30, the man told police that God compelled him to rescue the snake and keep it safe from traffic.

Well, meanwhile in Jacksonville Beach this morning.... 6, 7, or 8 feet? I'm not getting the tape measure out. Thank you to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission for relocating our guest.

Sgt. Larry Smith told local news stations the snake was 6 to 8 feet (2 to 2.5 meters) long.

When police stopped the man, they told him to throw the reptile into the back of their vehicle for safety.

In a WTLV-TV report , video shows a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer pulling the snake from the patrol car’s back seat. The rattles at the end of the snake’s tail can be heard shaking as the officer drops the snake into a plastic container.

The snake was relocated to a wooded area. No injuries were reported.

But did they relocate the homeless man :francis:)

Florida man charged after grandma dies; bed filled with maggots

Associated Press

MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man has been charged after his 87-year-old grandmother died and authorities say her bed was filled with live maggots.

Brevard County Sheriff’s deputies say Allen Arias brought an unresponsive Anita Arias to the hospital last month. The woman was covered in bed sores and some were infested with maggots.

A search warrant of the home revealed frozen dinners and dirty diapers stacked up and blood and feces stains on the bed and walls. Authorities said they also found full prescription bottles for Anita Arias who suffered from dementia. Authorities said she was in fair health when Allen Arias brought her home from a rehabilitation center in December.

An autopsy showed she died of dehydration and emaciation and that her blood sugar was as high as could be measured.

Florida Today reports Arias was charged Thursday with aggravated manslaughter of an elderly person.

Delivery driver takes Amazon package from Parkland home

PARKLAND, FLA. (WSVN) - Surveillance cameras captured a delivery driver taking an Amazon package she had just dropped off at a Parkland home.

The reported theft took place along the 9900 block of Northwest 66th Manor in the gated community, Monday afternoon.

“We ordered a very simple charger for my Apple Pencil,” said homeowner Julie Bresset.

The video showed an Amazon contractor dropping off and taking a picture of the package at the home’s front porch.

The woman could then be seen in the video picking up the package before walking away with it.

“I was on my way to softball practice, and I got an indicator that a package had been delivered,” said homeowner John Bresset. “I called and said, ‘Hey, did you get your package?'”

“I’m like, ‘What package are you talking about?'” said Julie. “I come outside, and I’m like, ‘Honey, there’s no package here.'”

Julie said they were shocked when they saw the surveillance video footage.

“I had to watch it twice, to be honest with you, because it was so shocking,” said Julie. “I’m like, ‘That didn’t just really happen.'”

The delivery driver had to show an ID to get into the gated community, so the couple doesn’t understand why she would take the package.

“I was just surprised by the whole thing,” said Julie.

The couple eventually called both the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Amazon. The charger, valued at $7, has since been replaced.

The Bressets said it’s not the money that upsets them, but their sense of security.

“Whether it’s $7 or $1,000, it’s your stuff, it’s your home, and someone else took it,” said John.

Amazon said they are investigating the incident. In the meantime, the driver has been taken off her route until they can figure out what happened.

If you have any information on this alleged theft, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a $3,000 reward.
