What happened to Rock is slowly happening to Rap. You are seeing the beginning of Rap no longer being the dominant genre in music

Rap today is where hair metal/glam rock was back then.

How? The biggest rappers today aren't comparable to hair/glam rock aesthetically. If anything a lot of shyt is way more toned down these days. The shiny suit era was far more comparable to hair metal than now. And just like grunge appeared and put that shyt to a cease, DMX did the same for rap.

You could also compare snap and ring tone eras to hair metal, with Jeezy/TI/Gucci/etc being the movement that ushered it out again.

ATL, but rasied in DMV
None of this is coming back
Blues, House, Jazz, Soul, and R&B probably will comeback, because they never really left. It's just that rap and hip-hop overshadowed them for awhile.

Funk, Soul, and R&B were interchangeable back in the day, especially Soul and R&B. And Funk was the Rock and Roll of Soul. Soul was just Black music, and every Black age group listened to the same sounds for the most part. That's probably what we will be going back to, hopefully. A lot of rap was a spinoff of Soul, R&B, and Funk. They used a lot of it, beginning with Funk. And the originators of Funk, like George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelics, never got paid. The Funkadelics weren't into who had copyrights, etc... They were more concerned with making sounds for the people. A lot of rap used R&B too. I'm sure everybody is aware of that, for example Kanye, Jayzee, etc...

I can't really say it's been anything "must hear" for me in at least 4-5 years.

The barrier for entry is too low so it's oversaturated, been saying for awhile. The fact that you can make a full song in a bedroom in 30 minutes in your spare time takes the blood, sweat, and tears out of the lyrics and performance.

The gatekeepers of yesteryear were a double-edged sword; they chose who blew, but at least they picked people who had talent.

Afrobeat, reggaeton, and EDM got it right now...and that shyt MID as fukk as it is, but it's generally of a higher quality than rap.
