I need to know more details.
This is basically the ultimate "jack of all trades" IT job
How many years did you spend as an engineer before you applied for an architect Job? And what environment(s) do you work in?
I'm trying to get where you are
Got degrees in Chem. E. and Psychology. Started in IT in 2003 (interned at Goodyear and Siemens before getting my first full-time gig).
I've done a little bit of everything in IT LOL
Worked as a hardware/software tech in undergrad, then worked as an application/systems/database admin in higher ed for a bit. Did a little software dev on the side. Most of my stuff was hands-on, learn on the job types of situations too.
Name a system, I've probably worked in it in some form or fashion: VMware, Citrix, PEGA, Linux, etc. I worked for about 7-8 years before getting the architect gig. I basically function as a consultant to multiple companies. I prefer consulting vs. working for one company because I get to work on varied projects. The platform used ultimately depends on what the customer's end goals/needs are, the pre-existing systems that are already in place, and how they want the integration(s) to function in the overall enterprise system. I 'design' the system and the engineers build it. Having a background in engineering helps, because I have a basic idea of how things work when talking to the people that are doing the actual building.
