Starting watching Monogatari Series: Second Season. Just finishing up the Tsubasa Tiger arc. This arc ranks up right next to Tsubasa Cat and Kizumonogatari as the best arc in the series so far. The way it connected so many arcs of the following.
In this arc, it revolves around a Tiger for Hanekawa. Which makes for the second apparition that Hanekawa has encountered. But following this, Hanekawa's house burns down and what this arc goes for is tackle two big issues surrounding her. The first being not relying on or asking others for help. The other is her feelings that she holds for Koyomi, which she buries deep in her heart.
One thing which we haven't seen from this series yet is the friendship between Hanekawa and Senjougahara. Outside mentions of Senjougahara makes of Hanekawa. We see that Senjougahara truly treasures her as a friend and is heartbroken since she was not willing to ask for help given she has nowhere to sleep. In there we get fun banter between these two. The most interesting thing is how Senjougahara acts around Hanekawa. Essentially,
we see a lot of Koyomi's personality here. His influence on Senjougahara and it really shows how much she loves her.
Senjougahara is able to convince Karen to let Hanekawa stay at their place. Since she knows from Koyomi how much of a sense of justice they have. One great scene is one that Araragi's mother has with Hanekawa as she leaves. It has to do with what she says as she leaves. It very much the manner in which you would say when you leave your house and plan to come back. Their mother very aware of the friendship Hanekawa has with Koyomi and how much Karen and Tsukihi look up to her as an older sister.
But ultimately, Hanekawa is ignoring her problems with her family. Why aren't they giving her a place to sleep? Do they not care? Is Hanekawa ultimately fine with it? Or is she afraid to speak up. While their mother wants to make Hanekawa at home while she stays over, it is a fair point to address the elephant in the room. As the cram school burns down, Senjougahara makes a point of the places being burned down. Following this pattern, Senjougahara's apartment and the Araragi household would be next. Unlike Hanekawa's house, which had nobody she held dear and the Cram School, which nobody was around anymore. Those two places had people she held close to her heart. So she makes a big step to asking for help. She asked Black Hanekawa for that help.
One big thing that we learn is that the Tiger was created from Hanekawa's side of envy, as Neko was created from her stress. Dealing with her envy the same way we have seen Neko deal with her stress. The envy of her parent's having a room to themselves while she didn't have one. Cram school, while not a suitable place to live, it was a place that was an improvement compared to when she lived at home. The envy why she couldn't have that. Both Senjougahara's apartment and Araragi's household don't need to go without mention.
Of course, the tiger is aware how Hanekawa is. She will suppress her emotion so that it doesn't hurt her. But for the first time we see Hanekawa ask for help, here we also see want to be more human. Throughout this series, Hanekawa always seemed like the person that would go above and beyond for everybody. She didn't even felt human at times. That is clearly because she suppressed her emotions, and at some point for one person they can only do so much. The "I don't want to be real, but I want to be human" line really empathizes this. Real represents her being a leader and tackling various problems without caring what happens to her. Being human means she finally cares about herself. This is a giant step for Hanekawa.
Given that Hanekawa wrote to help me note in Koyomi's room, it is also fitting he comes to save her. Since her feelings for him is the other issue that she has been bottling in her heart. As we have seen throughout this series, their friendship has been very well done. But finally Hanekawa has the courage to confess her feelings even though in her heart she knows what his answer is. He loves Senjougahara and can't reciprocate Hanekawa feelings here. But at the same time, he will do his best for her. Overcoming this grief of his rejection is something she needed to do. Also, very fitting as her hair color changes representing of her two little sisters, Neko and Tiger, coming back home.
Hanekawa willingly to tackle her family problems is important here. She mentions how when she met Mayoi, how she back a lost cow of not tackling her issues. Really impressed that tied that arc to Hanekawa's issues. But finally, she was not lost anymore and finally asked for a room. While the topic of what parent wouldn't give their child a room is another manner entirely. The big importance here is that Hanekawa starts caring about herself and she finally, for the first time, feels human. Easily a 10/10 arc as mentioned before.
