It goes off the rails some but it's something worth watching. They balance the darker elements with the comedy better than a lot of shonen.Just watched the first episode of Soul Eater and this shyt is lit so far. The animation looks so good for it coming out back in 08-09.

Fire Force takes it because it's got more seasons and it sticks closer to the manga than Soul Eater did. Might not sound like a big deal but it's actually better for world building and character development.
Still, for as short & freestyled as Soul Eater was, it created a few memorable characters with nice depth. I'll compare notes with you after you finish it.

Anime is mostly a promotional tool for manga, light novels, and video games. They'll make an anime of something that's still in progress to drum up interest in the source material. It'll get a season if it's lucky and that's it. Your aversion to reading manga means you'll typically get the worst version of any given story or an incomplete version of the story. You'll also be constantly kept in suspense of a story continuing or not.
