To me the only reason to watch the anime original FMA is to see the stuff Brotherhood skimmed over towards the beginning. Otherwise it's just inferior. If I hadn't seen either I'd just skip it and watch Brotherhood.

I think they're about even. I like the direction that both versions took the series.
The best moments of FMA simply don't exist in the anime original version. Mustang and Lust, Mustang and Envy, Olivier and Raven, the final fight between Scar and Bradley.
Hell some of the best characters in FMA either don't exist in the anime original or are completely different or are inferior versions of themselves.
I'm thinking most of the people that love the anime original version probably watched it first because it would stand up better if you did. If one watched Brotherhood then the other version it would be interesting to see if that person thought they were almost even.
