I notice japanese folks love wimpy weak MCs...idk maybe its for character development.

I don't really see a problem with it as long as the characters grow in a meaningful way. It's like real life, very few people are going carry themselves like god's gift to earth when they haven't developed any sort of pedigree for what they are doing. It comes with time. Being timid is human nature.
