Right now, it seems more likely that Peele would direct Akira first due in part to the number of rewrites The Flash is going through and Warner's current decision to prioritize #Aquaman.

Looks like he will most likely choose Akira.

I don't see the point in adapting Akira to live action either really. It's a classic anime of course, and the story is greatly layered, but even then most of the movie's rep comes from the animation itself which was just next level. And that is something that obviously can't be translated to live action.
