I'm not saying NO kids are playing instruments....but its def not a common thing in a lot of the country. I wasnt being absolute in my statement but ita a fact that many schools have cut music education overall esp in inner city schools. That's just an inarguable fact

There are still musicians coming up thru church sure but it's not as strong or prevalent as before

HBCU is one of the last strongholds, agreed...I went to FAMU so I know all about that but that being said....

Lot of kids(black, white, whatever) now idolize producers and DJ....they wanna be the next Metro or Diplo not the next Jimi, Ernie, Eddie Van Halen

Does Dj culture even exist in Black America anymore with the kids?

I'm actually trying to look for younger Black Djs. Cause my time is pass, I just wanna spin for fun.

Kids are playing instruments, but continuing with it and forming bands. These things aren't really happening. Even in an area like DC with Gogo, where 30 years ago, every Black area in PG, DC, and even in certain areas off Montgomery County had a "Band" or 2.

I party with a couple off people who worked at Duke Ellington(Performing Art School) . And even they said the number off kids coming in there for music is dropping all the time.

The thing is, GoGo isn't really a true breeding ground/ strong hold for instrumentalist like the Black Church/HBCU Bands, which are widespread, for obvious reasons.

Especially with modern day Black music, kids don't really see a pathway to superstardom playing instruments. They just see themselves becoming session and backing band guys. And they fortunate enough maybe become writers, producers and composers.

this is true....see Lizzo example

And other then Bluenote and a few Boutique New wave Jazz and Soul Labels. Labels aint signing none Rockish Musicians.

Just my take

There are actually alot of black instrument-playing musicians that are signed outside of Jazz/Soul labels who fit into that Gospel/Roots/Blues/Americana market but they aren't household names that appear in the top 40. They are semi-stars and even sometimes, Grammy winners within those niche markets though

That's thing tho, being in the top 40 and being visible matters. These musicians are in very niche markets. These aren't the people who are going to make young kids pick up instruments and form bands.

def not the same way it was back in the day. The digitalization of music really had these kids devalue music, you can just make a playlist for everything, no one cares to hear custom blends and mixes. That said, my nephew is into DJ’ing, but with him, I see it’s more about playing current hits. They don’t care to sequence parties so that you hit different eras or vibes.

this gif is dope lol

Depends on what kind of music they make and what their goals are; not everyone wants to be a top 40 act:francis:

Then you've got guys like Q-Tip with perfect pitch.
Terrace Martin whose not only a skilled producer and rapper but
he can play sax at a very high level.
Quik can play his ass off too.
Hell even Dre can play the piano:

The problem is SO many people don't realize that musicians make music, :pachaha:
They too often think "I need a machine !!!!" to do so.

And if we're keeping it G right now.
Even the Rock dudes are struggling to get major label support.
Roll up to a label tryna promote a traditional rock or metal band will get you
the :mjpls: but yeah can we throw some synthesizers on top ? Maybe a rap
feature ? No ? Oh. Ok. Well good luck.:mjpls:
