I love hiphop but I think we kinda put too many eggs in that basket. Its be nice to see black folk branch back out into rock, funk, electro/dance etc

I know theres cats that already are but get kids back into playing instruments. Reopen music education in elementary and middle school

My little nephew just turned 6, plan on getting him piano lessons next year

it's a myth that the younger generation aren't playing instruments because all one has to do is look at the youngns coming up in either the black church, hbcu bands and the new orleans brass band culture to see that the myth is false.

I read the first part of your post and was about to reply with the second part of your post.

Your right. They’ve got to bring shyt like Choir and Orchestra back into the elementary schools. I remember when taking either Choir or Orchestra was a REQUIRED class. I hated lugging around a damn violin for half a year but there were other kids who took to it and it can be a gateway to other instruments.

Especially black kids in underprivileged areas. They might not be able to afford instruments but a pen and paper are ALWAYS around so writing raps is kind of “easy” in a sense as far as getting started

you have stats on this? outside of the south, seems like a lot of black people aren't in church like that anymore, kids aint really there playing the instruments. we know school programs are cut...i can't speak on NO's culture - but that's one city that's always been about instrumentation. i don't have not one friend who has their kid(s) play instruments, and that's across socio economic lines.

and beyond just black folks, as of late, society has shyt on the arts and pushed kids toward STEM/hard skills, kids spend more time in sports, then of course those who might be interested in music can make it electronically which is easier than procuring instruments and learning to play...happy to be wrong, but pretty much every article i find on this + anecdotal observations have shown a huge decrease in the # of kids playing instruments, especially when compared to kids who were in school in the 80's and earlier

It’s definitely true that a lot of schools have gotten rid of their music programs

But in terms of the music industry, I don’t think the issue is that trained musicians aren’t out there. The issue is that labels nowadays are lazy and all they care about branding/marketing. They don’t care about developing talent & maximizing potential, they’re signing people based off how many followers they have, and pushing them cookie-cutter music to go to viral.

The major's played (play ?) a HUGE part in deciding who got (gets) signed and who could get
exposure.

So there are young bassists, guitarists, trumpet players, sax players etc.
Who can't hope to have careers because the people who decide who gets
airtime have decided "no one wants to hear that".

I hate Rosenberg being on there. He's such a fukking clown. I don't know if is he, but I prefer he isn't.

White hip hop heads rarely respect RnB like black folks do. Most of of us were raised around our grandmas and mamas playing the classics while they moms were playing Fleetwood Mac and shyt. Plus the underlying gospel elements of classic soul is ingrained in us from centuries of spirituals and going to church with grandma when we was young

na

outside of the south, seems like a lot of black people aren't in church like that anymore, kids aint really there playing the instruments.

contemporary church musical culture (I'm talking the kind with choir directors, large ensembles and multi instrumentalist) is bigger outside the South. I'm talking North East, LA, Chicago, Detroit etc..

this is why outsiders go to those places to learn these style(s)...they almost never go to the South to learn them

Dong-keun, Jun, You-mi and members of Korea's only gospel choir Heritage, along with eight other people who have passed the audition travel to Harlem, New York to learn about the gospel music and also to perform with the Harlem gospel singers..

we know school programs are cut...i can't speak on NO's culture - but that's one city that's always been about instrumentation. i don't have not one friend who has their kid(s) play instruments, and that's across socio economic lines.

I'm from the North East and it's common in all the church going folks I know.

zaytoven is the hiphop example

It's one of those talking points that's very exaggerated

I'm not saying NO kids are playing instruments....but its def not a common thing in a lot of the country. I wasnt being absolute in my statement but ita a fact that many schools have cut music education overall esp in inner city schools. That's just an inarguable fact

There are still musicians coming up thru church sure but it's not as strong or prevalent as before

HBCU is one of the last strongholds, agreed...I went to FAMU so I know all about that but that being said....

Lot of kids(black, white, whatever) now idolize producers and DJ....they wanna be the next Metro or Diplo not the next Jimi, Ernie, Eddie Van Halen

I’m not a Rosenberg or even a Ebro hater like most are on here but Rosenberg gotta take a time out when it comes to some R&B or real black music. I just watched the hot 97 recap and his disinterest and over corny comments let me know he don’t have the soul to comment on the culture
