contemporary church musical culture (I'm talking the kind with choir directors, large ensembles and multi instrumentalist) is bigger outside the South. I'm talking North East, LA, Chicago, Detroit etc..

this is why outsiders go to those places to learn these style(s)...they almost never go to the South to learn them

I'm from the North East and it's common in all the church going folks I know.

zaytoven is the hiphop example

It's one of those talking points that's very exaggerated

God damn I love posts like this with reference points. :salute:

Then you've got guys like Q-Tip with perfect pitch.
Terrace Martin whose not only a skilled producer and rapper but
he can play sax at a very high level.
Quik can play his ass off too.
Hell even Dre can play the piano:

The problem is SO many people don't realize that musicians make music, :pachaha:
They too often think "I need a machine !!!!" to do so.

Don’t forget about Masego too

def not the same way it was back in the day. The digitalization of music really had these kids devalue music, you can just make a playlist for everything, no one cares to hear custom blends and mixes. That said, my nephew is into DJ’ing, but with him, I see it’s more about playing current hits. They don’t care to sequence parties so that you hit different eras or vibes.

this gif is dope lol

This is true. Hell, when I was attending my alma mater, they used to have a 90’s party every semester (don’t know if they still do during the pandemic) and these bammas be playing like 30% 90’s shyt and 70% current music/Trap music :hhh: That shyt inspired me to at the very least create and give them actual 90’s music playlist lol

Not because of lack of musicians but more because the industry doesn't make them a priority for the most part:

Hypnotic Brass band from Chicago should be stars; they can play anything and have connections to Sun-Ra (jazz musician)

they have collaborated with many people

....but they are practically unknown to mainstream

.
.
or Trombone Shorty who was out in these Orleans streets since he was 4

playing with people like Wynton Marsalis

...I remember him getting some shine almost 10 years ago but now I haven't much from him

.
.

or Gary Clark jr who should be a mega star

....I remember it was looking like he was going to be big at one point but the shine has since faded

I know one of the trumpet players in Hypnotic. I played trumpet with him in HS band! This group is dope

That's what I mean by exposure, all of these guys were exposed to Black Musicians growing up.
And Major labels weren't averse to Black Bands.

With that said, I think Quik and Dre became musicians in the traditional sense after their introduction to Hip-Hop
not prior to it.

And for the brehs who don't know:

Facts! PJ Morton is one of my favorite musicians. It def helped him having a father in the gospel field and i like how PJ don't shy away from that churcy sound

The hamiltones background singer Vito is HELL on the guitar.. I had no idea until last year.

I think the problem with this new generation is that MOST didnt grow up in a church. I know there are people who dont believe in Christianity... im merely speaking on the extra dynamic gospel brings out of black folk!!! MOST of our greats were brought up in the church (Whitney, Luther, Al green, Sam Cooke, Aretha ect) and thats where their voice was crafted

Listen at these on the trombones BEASTING.

I was :russ: at Ron admitting he basically stole Devotion from EWF and turned it into Choosy Lover.

I mean it's wild that they were both hits and they're pretty much exactly the same ass song.

I woulda felt a way about that if I was them EWF cats back in the day :patrice:
This happened a lot back in the day.

I wonder if Isaac Hayes approached Ray Parker Jr.
