That wasn't going to turn the tide on an artist as big as Ja was. People were already tired of Ja. 50 was more or less who people latched onto once they were done with Ja. Basically, Ja Rule was what 50 became in 2007. Kanye didn't necessarily kill 50's career as much as people felt like 50 fell off and Kanye was more likeable and popular so people rode with Ye.
Causation is always difficult to prove with shyt like this, but the timing really lines up. Ja is still all over the radio on huge songs in 2002. Meanwhile 50 is ascending and dissing him on mixtapes all through 2002. Ja drops an album end of the year that underperforms the one that dropped at the end of 2001. 50 becomes the biggest rapper in the game early in 2003 and continues to diss Ja. End of 2003 Ja drops an album that doesn’t even go gold :scust:

When n1ggaz say 50 would lose a versuz, do yall realize how big In da club and 21 questions is? Then his mixtape sh1t. I smell pu$$y. You not like me. Then go to the massacre. Fifs first 2 albums are only rivaled by Bigs first 2.
50 is not a good performer tho

the hype would die down quickly once people realize it's gonna be a snooze fest on his side vocally. if you think Dipset was bad :skip:

But 50 was dissing Ja well before then and it didnt put a dent in him. Ja's time was up. Im not saying 50 played no part at all but the idea that Ja was at his hieght of popularity when 50 took over is just false. Blood in my eye had no radio crossovers. It was a street album. It was not a surprise it didnt chart well. The things that killed Ja was a combo of time, dissin Em ( huge mistake) and 50. 50 played a part for sure though.

That wasn’t what THIS Verzuz was about, cause neither artist are guys people look to for albums (though I think Fat Joe has some nice albums based on running through his catalog a couple months back). Fat Joe in a way is NY Yo Gotti, where you can always count on him for a banger or two that hits the radio every 1-2 years.

Nah I've seen 50 twice and he's one of my favorite rappers since I was young, but he is nothing special when it comes to live performances.

He's better than alot of these new cats but he's lucky he has the classic music to carry the performances.

There used to be a divide in hip hop between underground and mainstream/commercial. Hip hop had artistic integrity back in the day. Anything with R&B or singing was considered watered down hip hop. I realize it’s difficult to fathom that this could have been the case if you didn’t live through it, given how any and everything is accepted nowadays.

That did happen but it was very ahistoric and influenced by people who were outside of the first generation of rappers/born after after hiphop was a distinct genre of music. If you go back listen to those hiphop live jams from the late 1970s/early 80's, you'll hear them harmonizing and singing melodies like todays rappers
