It's all very strange it wants to engage in edgy meanspirited humor and also wants to take on the straight white man patriarchy. It's hard to tell what's a joke or a social political statement.

"He looks like Hitler and I'm not just saying that because we call everything Hitler now days!"

So I can see how this show might piss everybody off. I'm not invested in any of the stories, none. They're not that interesting and all the characters are a$$holes so it's hard to root for them. Her mom disappearance her dad is indifferent. Daphane finding her parents or her relationship with Velma. Fred or Norville it's all like whatever. Really they could've dressed these characters differently and changed their names and no one would accuse this of copying Scooby Doo or anything.

The best satires and parodies tend to come from people who were fans of the source material but this was probably both a power play and vanity project from Mindy Kaling.

This show taught me I’ve misheard part of the lyrics of Pony my entire life. I thought he was saying “jump on it let’s do it ride it my pony”. Turns out he was saying “if you’re horny let’s do it ride it my pony.”

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia kinda codified the modern-day "Every character is a terrible person" style comedy but the thing they (along with Curb and Seinfeld) understand that none of these other folks do is that at no point does the story expect you to root for them. You want to laugh at their failures.

And this show clearly wants to be Harley Quinn, but thing about that show is even though they're objectively bad people, they're still actually likable and treat other people well (in a weird villainous context but still :pachaha:). If anything that's a show about terrible people learning to become less terrible.

I can see the it's always sunny influences in this show but I think a lot of the hate for the jokes is because Scooby-Doo characters cannot be made Into villains or a$$holes like you do with Harley Quinn or the gang

On some level you have to like the characters you are watching lol

Still the hate watchers are straight up floating this show now
It's said time and time again if you don't like something don't watch or talk about it

A streaming cartoon does not depend on ratings or audiences scores it depends on viewership
He'll Rick and morty been bad since season 2 finished and people still watch it religiously
Same thing with family guy or Simpsons
These shows live or die based on viewers

This show is bad. I mean really bad. I still plan to continue watching. Fred is kinda funny. The rest of the Scooby-Doo gang really isn't. It doesn't feel like it has much to do with the source material at all. It just used that to get more eyeballs on it. It worked cause I'm watching.

Every now and then someone who is a minority is prominent involved with the creation or promotion of a work that turns out to not be very good. These works garner an inordinate amount of backlash as people continue to dogpile on them. The reality is the people who simply don't like the work because it's bad are being riled up and weaponized by the anti-woke mob to send a message that minorities and marginalized groups shouldn't be allowed to create major works. The origins of the work being dislike almost always pre-date the work being released because the anti-woke mob as soon as they see the minority involved lays the groundwork for it.

Velma is a deeply flawed work but it's not necessarily because a minority was the driving force behind it but instead because a good chunk of the humor isn't really funny and it props it self up on source material it doesn't really have anything to do with.

Example: Disney just did a live action version of Pinocchio. It came out and it was poorly received. There is no outrage raging about it and almost nobody talks about it anymore. Check the discourse of She-Hulk or The Little Mermaid Live Action and there's either a simmering or huge outrage over them. Even go back and look at people talk about Black Widow.

If you're a woman or minority and heavily involved in the creation or promotion of a major work that shyt better be academy award level good or it will be torn down to an absurd level.

I can agree with this.

There's so much bad media out there. Half the shyt they release is not worth the effort to make or watch.

But since it's Mindy, people are acting like she assaulted an elderly woman. People are like legit angry or something.

Meanwhile they just shrug at other series' that are wack.

Edit: damn. The more I think about this the more it resonates. They gatekeep like a MOTHERFUKCER for non white males. It mirrors corporate America and all aspects of life under white supremacy.

So basically Zaslav cancelled a traditional Scooby show because Mindy Kaling is behind this and he cancelled a Batgirl movie while going ahead with a Black Adam movie because it had the Rock behind it. And both of these are getting savaged online

Dog...what's the fukking endgame for Zaslav? Theres not one redeemable thing this dude has done so far in my opinion.

Didn't watch the show, and probably wouldn't, but I like the discussion a few posts up

I've said a few times, on here, and in real convos, not every minority backed, or directed work has to be amazing. Some is going to be ok. Some is going to be bad.

it's another version of the model minority. You have to be perfect to be here. We are here because we were born to this.

They have like $50 billion in debt and their free cash flow has gone negative. He's trying to aggressively repay that debt. The previous quarter they had to pay almost half a billion in interest on their debt. Mind you the entire market cap for the company is like $30 billion right now.

Still think Velma is better than Birdgirl and Teenage Euthanasia.

I'm not sure if its better than YOLO: Crystal Fantasy, I only saw the season finale on tv(2 episodes) and it was pretty interesting. If someone says that show is good I'll check out the rest. I like Harley Quinn and Daria(need to rewatch this) more than Velma.

I only tried to compare Velma with other adult comedy cartoons with women as the main character.
